RICHARD LAWRENCE Obituary

LAWRENCE March 5, 1990 - October 11, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Thomas Lawrence, who left us after a brave 18-month battle with ALS. Throughout his illness, Richard showed remarkable strength, grace, and even humour, always more concerned about others than himself.

Richard was the beloved son of Andrew (Lori) and Fiona Lawrence, and cherished brother of Nathan (Marie) and Derek (Leah). He was also a caring stepbrother to Sam (Kim) and Emily (Paul), and a dear nephew and cousin to Uncle Graham, Auntie Jackie, Uncle John, Michael (Melissa), and Andrea (Taylor). He was predeceased by his grandparents Dr. Ian and Marie Scrimgeour, Andy and Velma Lawrence and his cousin Evan Hinsperger (Michele), who we know have welcomed him home.

A proud graduate of the Computer Programming program at Confederation College (Class of 2017), Richard began his career in IT before joining the family business alongside his dad and brother in real estate at Royal LePage. Starting as the company's IT Manager, Richard soon discovered his passion for the work and became a licensed real estate agent, where he found early success and fulfillment.

Richard was happiest when surrounded by his family and friends. He had a lifelong love of music, video games, and technology, and he brought those interests to life with creativity and curiosity. But above all, Richard was a devoted uncle who adored his nieces and nephews Ben, Ellie, Claire, Penny, and Isaac, and shared a special bond with Mason and Bronwyn. He was incredibly proud of them and loved being Uncle Richard. Even on his hardest days, his first question was always, "What are the kids up to?" He loved hearing stories about their achievements in sports, how school was going, and what funny mischief they were getting into.

In his younger years, Richard could be found running around with his brothers and cousins, trying every sport imaginable, hockey, karate, lacrosse, football, paintball and snowboarding. His playful spirit, big heart, and quick wit made him a joy to be around.

For those who have experienced ALS in their lives, you'll know how many people it takes to walk that journey. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the ALS team at Sunnybrook (Dr. Zinman and Dr. Bonares), Dr. Murray, Dr. Peshcha, Dr. Moorehouse, and the incredible nurses, PSWs, and support staff at Pinewood. We are also deeply grateful to all the family and friends who helped care for Richard over the past several months. We cannot express in words how much your care, compassion, and presence have meant to us.

Richard's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His quiet strength, kindness, contagious laugh, and love for family and friends will continue to inspire all who were lucky enough to call him son, brother, uncle, and friend.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's name can be made to ALS Canada or the George Jeffrey Foundation - Adult Augmentative and Alternative Communications Program.

A celebration of Richard's life will be held on October 21st at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (207 Brodie Street South) at 10:30 AM with a reception to follow at the Valhalla Hotel.

"Rocket Richard" acquired this nickname at Camp Firefly, was so energetic and fun. He would be up early in the am with the kitchen and nursing staff. Every time I hear "Hey Jude" I think of he and Mary Beth doing Karaoke at camp.
Incredibly sad to hear of Richard passing. Sincere condolences to Richards entire family and friends. Rest easy Richard!

Fiona and the Lawrence family: Our deepest condolences on the passing of Richard. Our thoughts are with you all during this difficult time. Richard was always the life of the party so to speak and everyone gravitated toward his positivity and the youngsters looked up to him as a mentor at Camp Firefly. Richard helped the campers with type 1 diabetes gain confidence when they were required to step outside their comfort zones. His impact lives on. He will be truly missed by everyone who knew him.
