The eldest of 7 children born to Giovanni and Anna Stortini, Rita was raised in Jackfish, relocating briefly to Halifax and then Schreiber following her marriage to Short. As evidenced by the lengthy list above, she was at the center of a very large and close-knit family group, and family meant everything to her. She lived her life devoted especially to her children and grandchildren, but was equally committed to her full, extended family. She was always at her happiest with a house or camp full of family and friends, hosting coffee and chats at home each week day afternoon and large family gatherings at her camp on Hydro Bay each Sunday. She was a life-long member of Holy Angels Catholic Women's League, and until recently, actively involved in their work. A Resurrection Mass will be held for Rita on Saturday, September 7th, 2013 beginning at 11:00 am. at Holy Angel's Roman Catholic Church in Schreiber with interment to follow in Schreiber Cemetery. If friends so wish, charitable donations can be made in Rita's name to Northern Cancer Research or The McCausland Hospital."
