Robert Atchison Obituary

Robert Hubert Benson Atchison (Bob) passed away with family at his side at the age of 92 at Pinewood Court on Fri. Jan. 16. He was predeceased by his wife, Jessie in 1999, his parents William and Annie Atchison, brother Frank in June 2014 and brother Stanferd in infancy. He is survived by son Robert (Bob) Atchison Jr., daughter Sharon Katusa, son-in-law Michael, granddaughters Michelle Katusa Fish (Jonathan) and Shannon Katusa, and his great-grandchildren Danica Fish, Vimy Katusa and Exley Fish; sisters-in-law Doris Atchison, Martha Paul and Edna Parenteau and numerous nieces and nephews all of whom he was very close to over the years.

Bob was born in Brookside, SK on the family farm in 1922 and must have had a great childhood there, as it was his favourite place on earth. At age 12, his family moved to Keewatin, ON and after the loss of his father he went to work, first building the Trans Canada Highway between Kenora and Vermilion Bay and then logging in Hudson, ON. He started working on the CN but shortly joined the Navy serving proudly through WWII. After the war he continued working for the CN first in Portage la Prairie, MB and then in Fort William, until his retirement.

After retirement, Bob and Jessie spent many years travelling south to Texas in winter and entertaining the granddaughters in summer by the backyard pool. After the death of his wife his greatest joy was going to Calgary to visit with his granddaughters whom he loved dearly. When the great-grandchildren came along he just adored being a GG (great grandpa) and considered himself lucky to have had such great times with them camping and fishing and spending Christmas in Calgary several years. He was also a proud Legion member and worked the bingos at Kakabeka Legion for years.

Although he used to curl and golf his favourite pastime was going for drives. He could drive through the countryside for hours on end and loved road trips. His final wishes were no memorial service but one last road trip to Saskatchewan, where he will be laid to rest in the family cemetery plot later this summer along with his brother who passed away last June.

We would like to thank the incredible staff at Pinewood Court for their care and compassion and the daily work they do to make a difficult situation bearable for their patients and their families. We would also like to thank Dr. Klassen for his help in Dad's last few months and Northwest Funeral Alternative for their assistance in making final arrangements.
