It was from his father that he inherited his strong work ethic, which served him well during his 44 years at the Port Arthur Shipyard. He began his career as a fitter helper, where his dedication, determination and integrity helped him to rise through the ranks until his eventual retirement as the General Superintendent. On August 31, 1946 Robert married the love of his life Helen Mae Given. Together they built their family home on Ruttan Street, raised their two sons David &Tom, and happily resided there for the rest of their lives. Robert, Helen and the boys loved to travel, and went on many family vacations. They enjoyed camping, fishing, and many memorable times at Shebandowan and Silver Islet. Helen and Bob also traveled extensively with family visiting their many friends in Florida, Texas and Arizona. During his retirement, he spent many hours tending to his garden, and sharing the "Fruits of his Labours" with family, friends, and the community. In his later years, as his beloved wife Helen succumbed to Alzheimer's, he never wavered in his undying devotion, and unselfishly provided and cared for her.
