It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved husband and father, Robert Bertrand Hemsworth, at age 61 on Monday, June 12, 2017.
Born to “Daisy and Bert” in Fort William, Ontario, Rob grew up on Amelia Street as the youngest of six children. While attending Westgate High School, he developed his passion for track and field and football as an all-star athlete. There, he met the love of his life, Susan Miller, and the high school sweethearts married in 1980. Together they raised their three children, Paul, Katie and Callie with the utmost love and affection. He was so proud of all of his children, and has since watched his family grow, welcoming their spouses Leah, Matt and Jon into the family with open arms (after he understood their intentions, of course!). His most recent source of pride and love was his “wee mannie” Oliver. Nothing made him happier than spending time with his grandson, playing the harmonica together or singing with him at the market.
To know Rob was to know immense love, kindness, and of course, his sense of humour. He was a best friend to many and a “second father” to his kids' friends and neighbours. Rob's life was enriched by many life experiences, including getting into trouble with his siblings in Westfort, bonding with friends at Chippewa, bonfires on Moodie St, camp and Nascar getaways, hot tubs and family jams on Pole Line. Recently, Rob dedicated his time to improving his lifestyle, social consciousness and outlook on life. He loved working out with son Paul and shooting the breeze with everyone at Thrive. He brought positive energy wherever he went; seeing “Hemsy” was the highlight of many people's day. Rob could often be found in his rocking chair in the garage, fully appreciating the gift of music and life. He loved travelling with his best friend, Susan – most of all their trips to Maui, Grand Marais, Africa and Arizona. Anyone could see that Rob and Susan adored each other; despite Susan's heartbreak, these precious memories and reminders of Rob's sense of humour will help her heal.
Rob is survived by his wife Susan, children Paul (Leah), Katie (Matthew Ventresca), and Callie (Jonathan Chien), grandson Oliver, siblings Peter (Sylvia), Bruce (Rosalie), Don, Joan, and George (Denise), brother-in-law Glenn (Peggy), sister-in-law Janie, cherished nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog Daisy. He was predeceased by his parents, Marjory and Bert, sister Patricia, parents-in-law Marjorie and Earl Miller, and sister-in-law Linda Miller.
Rob passed away while doing what he loved most – riding his bike to Grand Marais. His family would like to thank the first responders in Cook County, staff at North Shore Health, and everyone else who has helped with their support during this difficult time.
As per Rob's wishes, there will be no funeral service and the family will have a private celebration of his life. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Westfort Chapel, 420 West Gore Street at James.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, please consider supporting Roots to Harvest in Rob's name (www.rootstoharvest.org/donate). He would be most appreciative if you would play some Neil Young or Allman Brothers in his honour – loudly, of course.
To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

Rob will be remembered as an exceptional human being. He was the High School Jock who always acknowledged everyone and never made anyone feel small. As life goes on people change but Rob seemingly did not. Knowing his son Paul you could see the same spark in his eyes that his Dad had as a young man. The passion for sport and the generosity of spirit was passed down to his son. Our deepest condolences to his loving family.Rose and Dan Drewek
