ROBERT VERNON HUMPHREYSSept. 18, 1916 - May 22, 2001Mr. Robert Vernon Humphreys passed away after a lengthy illness at Thunder Bay Regional (McKellar Site). Born and raised in Fort William, he joined and served overseas during W.W.II with the Little Black Devils - 8th Battalion (Royal Winnipeg Rifles). While stationed in Holland, he met and married Anna (van der Toom), his wife of 55 years. After the war, Robert and Anna settled in Westfort, and raised their three children. Robert worked as a Letter Carrier for 30 years, retiring in 1977. He was past president and secretary of L.C.U.C. Local #24 for many years. His love for sport spanned his lifetime. During his younger days he played fastball, was a 'rink rat' at the Ft. Wm. Gardens, and on the Board of Directors at the Fort William Ski Club. Robert brought Slow Pitch to the City of Thunder Bay and was given the Citizen of Exceptional AchievementAward by the City for his work with the sport. Robert is survived by his wife Anna, and their three children Norma (Dennis Pease) Nanaimo, BC; Robert Jr. (Ronna); and Diana. Grandchildren Suzanne (Ben) DeFoy, Lisa and Ronald Humphreys. Predeceased by his parents Caroline and Frank, and his two sisters Nellie Arthurs and Ruby Moodie. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for the late Robert Humphreys will be held on Sat. , May 26, 2001 at 1:00 p.m.at the Church of the Holy Trinity and St. Jude, 830 Spring Street, with Rev. Alan Edwardson presiding. (across from Widnall Pool). If friends so desire donations may be made in Robert's memory to the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Foundation &/or Shelter House."
