Robert Lannon Obituary

March 5, 1949
– November 20, 2020

It is with sadness that we mark the passing of John Robert Lannon. He was predeceased by his parents Cecile Lannon (nee Gratton) and George Walter Lannon, and his older brother Paul. He is survived by his daughter Seren and his younger siblings Valerie, Art and Cathi.

Robert grew up in Thunder Bay where he attended St. Mary's elementary school, St. Patrick's high school and Lakehead University where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He went on to obtain his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Manitoba.

While his work life took him in various directions, he was an artist at heart. He loved telling stories through his writing and through music, where he enjoyed both piano and guitar. But his greatest pride and love was for his daughter Seren.

Robert lived most of his adult life in Ontario but also lived in BC from time to time. While he suffered from arthritis he spent the last years of his life relishing Pender Island on the west coast. He was active in the community, giving special support to the local mini-bus service that aided him and others with medical needs.

He will be remembered as a generous friend and for his humour and “gift of the gab.” May he rest in peace.

Just adding a note to Mike Weiler's joint message for us - Robert has indeed been a long-time friend for us, and he kept in touch from every new home and traveling base. I was lucky to visit him on Pender Island, which he told me felt like home from the first day there. His health challenges were many, and he did his best to adjust and find a way to still write and exercise his musical chops, and keep his focus on still being himself, no complaints, just the facts as they evolved. He’d call and I’d listen and ask questions for a long time, and he always had a new idea and adventure which typically involved some community social aspect, including performing or organizing or supporting useful or fun things, like the mini-bus and concerts. And his forever love, Seren. As it became harder to play guitar, he played electric keyboard and he focused on singing and songwriting. He was a dreamer and a doer, and he found a real haven and community on Pender Island. He is a part of us, forever. And he will be resting in peace.

Robert was one of my best friends growing up in Fort William. We spent many a weekend night celebrating, well, celebrating that it was the weekend. One of Robert's greatest fans was my mom Laureen Weiler. She would constantly give Robert the car and cause my dad to scratch his head wondering where we adopted this 7th child.
While we both went our own ways we kept in touch. While my wife Carolyn and I were in under grad and then in law school in Toronto we got back in contact with Robert and his beautiful daughter Seren. When Robert moved out West with his camper van he stayed with us for a few nights. I remember he joined me and Carolyn at a concert at the Orpheum to hear one of our favourite musicians Passenger. How fitting to spend that night with Robert given his passion for music.
we kept in touch by phone although I never got over there to see his new home. I do know he found the perfect home on Pender Island with a group of dear friends where he could practice his music and share his stories (and poor jokes!)
I will miss Robert but was glad he found peace on Pender.

What a shock...and so said to hear of Rob's passing. We were very close in high school and sadly lost touch after we moved from Thunder Bay. Rob is our son Rob's Godfather. Shows that as much as we would like, we aren't here forever. R.I.P buddy. Wish we could have reconnected.
