Dr. Robert Norman "Bob" MacKenzie passed away on Saturday, September 26th, 2015 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. He was 87. He was born on November 12th, 1927 in Regina and grew up on a farm near the Qu'Appelle Valley. He joined the Canadian Army during World War 2 but the war ended just before he was to be deployed overseas. He graduated from medical school at the University of Toronto in 1952 and thereafter obtained a specialty in radiology. In 1957, he and wife Salle moved to Port Arthur where he accepted a position as a radiologist at St. Joseph's hospital. In 1963, the family moved to Fort William and Bob became the head of the radiology department at McKellar Hospital. He remained at McKellar until his retirement and served several stints there as its medical Chief of Staff. He also taught the radiological technicians' course at Confederation College as well as serving on the College's Board of Governors between 1979 and 1985. Between 1982 and 1985, he was the Chairmen of that Board. Bob spent parts of over 40 summers at the family camp at Silver Islet. In his day, he was an avid curler, hunter, fisherman and boater. He was predeceased by his wife Salle in 2005, son Andy in 2012, his brothers Arch and Jim, and his parents Alexander McRae MacKenzie and Marian McCabe. He is survived by his sons Robert and David (Ellen), his grandchildren Ian, Megan and Sarah, Rebecca and Samantha, and Rhiannon (grandson-in-law Joseph Szura) and Hunter, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family extends its gratitude to the staff at Hogarth-Riverside Manor for their care, compassion and especially their patience in looking after Bob during his final few years. There will be no formal service of remembrance. The family would ask that if you knew Bob at all, you simply remember him in your own way. Dr. Bob's suggestion would no doubt have been a good cigar and a rum press.

My sincere condolences to all members of Bob's family. I was so saddened to learn of his difficult last years (he was a neighbour of my mother's at Hogarth) and of his recent passing. I first met Bob during my employment as a manager at Confederation College. He chaired our Medical Radiation Technology program's advisory committee for a number of years. He was wonderful to work with - kind, thoughtful, encouraging and always helpful and supportive of the program and students. I was delighted when Bob became a member of the College's Board of Governor's and later it's Chair.

Dr.MacKenzie was a well respected Physician at McKellar Hospital.I worked as a student from 1967-1970 and then continued to work at McKellar/TBRHSC until retirement. At no time did I ever encounter Dr.MacKenzie where I wasn't greeted with a warm smile and a hello. He was a quiet and gentle man and an asset to the hospital and his profession. He will be missed and fondly remembered.
