ROBERT SCHIEWE Obituary

September 16, 1939 ~ October 18, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Robert (Bob) Schiewe announce his passing at St. Joseph's Hospice on Saturday, October 18th, 2025 in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Bob was born to Sigismund and Martha Schiewe in Fort William, Ontario on September 16th, 1939. His childhood was spent in the Prospect School area surrounded by many friends that he would have for a lifetime. Bob enjoyed being outside and found joy in hunting, horses, skiing and a variety of sports including football which he would play through his years at PACI and continue through his time at the University of Toronto where he graduated from the School of Dentistry in 1963.

Bob continued his training at the University of Manitoba before returning to Port Arthur to set up his own practice with Dr. Ray Laine. The practice began on Red River Rd. prior to the current River St. location where his name is still proudly displayed.

After coming home Bob returned to downhill skiing which provided a chance encounter at Loch Lomond Ski Hill that would change his life forever. He met the love of his life Kathleen McLean and they were married in 1969. After starting a family Kathy gave up a nursing career to return to school for dental hygiene. This allowed them to work side-by-side until her passing in 2005.

Bob and Kathy loved their careers, and the check-ups were also a check in to see how someone was doing. They treated every patient as a friend. One of their greatest joys was seeing the second, and in some cases, the third generation of families as patients.

Dentistry brought Bob professional success including lifetime achievement awards and time as president of the Ontario Dental Association, but his real joy was having the ability to use meetings to travel with his family including trips to the East Coast, Alberta and British Columbia.

With some time on his own Bob made a phone call to old friend Heather Pearson. A few runs at Mount Baldy lead to spending his life with someone who he could laugh and share stories with for his remaining years. They had both experienced loss in life and were able to find joy in each other's company with Heather standing by his side until his last breath.

Bob was predeceased by his parents Sigismund and Martha, his wife Kathleen and his lifelong friend Pat Gamble.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Heather, sons Rob (Elizabeth) of Portland, Oregon and John (Nicki) of Thunder Bay and grandchildren Samantha, Gabe and George.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the 'Friends of Brent Park' at [email protected]. Bob and family have made this area their home for over 50 years and help towards planting trees and expanding the use of the park for all in the neighbourhood to enjoy would be appreciated.

Donations can also be made to the Thunder Bay Therapeutic Riding Association via their website.

A private interment will be held in November, and a memorial service is planned for Spring 2026; further details will be provided at a later date.

My condolences to the Schiewe family.
Dr. Schiewe was both a wonderful dentist and a wonderful gentleman who made you feel important and valued. I owe him a great deal of gratitude as he saved my teeth in 1991 after a hockey mishap. His work has stood the test of time.
May he rest in peace.

I adored this lovely man since early childhood. He was my first dentist. I never looked at it as going to the dentist, it was going to see Bob.
He was beyond kind and supportive to my dad when we lost Elsa in 2016. He was just this year a speaker at my dad's service recalling fond childhood memories of my dad and his family. My father and Bob were born 4 days apart and remained friends for their 85 years.
I have always held him in the highest regard and am deeply saddened by his passing.
Condolences to his wife Heather who was a great comfort at the time of my dads passing along with Bob. My condolences to his sons and their families. I will treasure his memory always.
