SIMONSEN September 18th, 1949 - August 1st, 2025
It is with great sadness, the family announces the passing of Robert Simonsen.
Bob's love of nature was influenced by growing up with his family at East Loon Lake. The Simonsen's camp, established in 1932 has left a legacy for generations to continue to appreciate. The family would move out to camp at the end of June and enjoyed the summer months with other campers. He created countless memories exploring the woods; driving his speedboat that he built with his dad, and spending time at the lake.
As a boy he played hockey and was a talented baseball player, star pitcher. Bob's other activities were cross country skiing, skating in the winter and playing tennis, sailing, canoeing, and hiking in summer and fall time. He discovered a new hobby creating a variety of stained glass pieces to share with family and friends.
Music was a huge part of Bob's life. A skilled pianist, he achieved a Grade 8 level from the Royal Conservatory of Music. He was also a self-taught guitar player with a passion for rock 'n' roll. As a teenager, he formed a band with his close friends, which made them very popular among their peers. Bob had the uncanny ability to play music by ear and would walk over to the piano to play a song he just heard. Whenever the opportunity arose, he would be drawn to play a piano or guitar, bringing live music into the setting.
Throughout his life, Bob had a varied and accomplished career. He worked initially at Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper and then at the local grain elevators. He also worked for his father at Newport Metal Industries. At a young age, Bob built a basement apartment in his first home, opening the doors to a life of self taught carpentry and real estate investments. Bob's pride was building a beautiful log home just outside of Thunder Bay.
Bob was known for his quick wit and dry sense of humour which he inherited from his father, Arne. He was a bit of a jokester, always ready with a clever quip or a playful tease catching you off guard and leaving you laughing. He also loved sharing memories of his grandmother Minnie, who he had a special relationship with. Bob's love for nature, music, dogs, and the times he spent with family and friends will continue to live on in our hearts.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Arne and Molly Simonsen, his daughter, Kirsten Simonsen, son-in-law, Greg Fayle, and his beloved black lab, Kola. He leaves behind his confidante partner, Sherri Henderson, his daughter, Sherry Simonsen, grandchildren Kyle Fayle, Molly Fayle (Nick) and; his devoted sister, Susan Simonsen, his niece, Melanie Sebesta (Paul) and their children, Simon and Sammy, his nephew, Jonathan Trognitz (Kylie) and their children, Adelyne and Abigail. He also leaves behind many cousins and extended family members.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, September 23rd at the Chanterelle from 2 to 4 pm where friends and family will gather to share stories, memories, and music to celebrate Bob's life.
As Bob reflected on his life, he felt grateful for the incredible journey he had.
Bob, your melody will live on in our hearts.
