Roderick Earl Atwood, age 51 years, died peacefully October 19, 2001 after a courageous battle with cancer. Rod was an employee at C.P. Rail for thirty years. He served as secretary of the United Transportation Union for many years and was always active in promoting the best interest of its' members. His talents ranged from mechanics to house construction, and, as he was a generous person, many benefited from his expertise. Because of his love for the outdoors he spent much time camping. His spirit of adventure meant he enjoyed travelling. He took great interest in music, and found pleasure in golfing, and auto racing. He is survived by his daughter Tammy, his mother Maria, his very special friend Kelly Kantola and her children Chris, Michael, Danielle & Jesse, brothers John (Adri), David (Debbie), Bill (Joanne), sister Susan (Rob Conacher), and numerous nieces and nephews. Many people also touched Rod's life including stepdaughter Laura and her children. He was predeceased by his father William in March, 1996. Further to Rod's wishes, a private funeral and cremation have already taken place. A celebration of Rod's life will be held Thursday November 1, 2001 at 12:00 p.m. at the DaVinci Centre - Marco Polo room. Everyone is welcome. The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation for the care and compassion given to Rod during his illness, especially his home care nurse Tammy and his oncologist Dr. Dhaliwal. Thank you to extended family, friends and neighbours who gave so generously in many ways. Your support and assistance during a painful and difficult time gave us great comfort and encouragement. To those who sent floral tributes, food baskets, baking, cards, letters, memorial donations your acts of kindness have touched us deeply. Our appreciation to the Blake Funeral Chapel for their professional assistance. Deepest gratitude is extended to Rev. Father David Gillen for presiding over the funeral and making a family gathering so meaningful and comforting.
