Mr. Ron Steele, age 81, was called to his eternal home on January 16, 2026, with his family by his side.
Ron was born and raised in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba and where he also met Helen Lukey whom he later married. They moved to Winnipeg, then to Kenora where Ron worked for Boise Cascade. Ron later attended Confederation College and received his welding certificate and then began working for Great Lakes Woodlands as a welder. He moved his family from Kenora to Thunder Bay, residing for the last 35 years in Neebing Township. Ron later joined the Iron Workers and was a proud, lifetime member of local #759.
Over the years, Ron contributed his talent and skills to some of Thunder Bay's Regions substantial projects such as the Thunder Bay Generating Station, Thunder Bay Water Treatment Plant, the Atikokan Hydro Plant, Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper PM5 expansion, and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre just to mention a few.
Dad was our mentor, guiding figure, and an enormous source of strength. He was the cornerstone of our family which he prioritized. As a role model he demonstrated true integrity, respect, and kindness.
Ron spent a lot of his time in his garage and workshops. He was a highly skilled and meticulous welder which showed in his many projects. It was very common for dad to be fabricating or repairing something for somebody. He had a lifelong passion for restoring and repairing vehicles from his teen age years right up until he became ill in 2026. His sons, Terry and Duane spent countless hours over the years working alongside him and learning from his many talents, and he would often say to them "take the time to do it right the first time, or don't do it at all".
In his younger years, Ron enjoyed competing in ice racing when he lived in Kenora. He also enjoyed attending car shows, taking many family trips home to Manitoba to visit friends and relatives.
Ron is survived by his children Wanda Zachary (Roy), Terry (Mary), Duane (Katherine). Grandchildren Christopher Zachary (Amanda), Jessica, Ryan, Matthew (Jecynda), Brooklyn, Cherika and Raegan. Great-grandchildren, Paul Zachary and Novah. Ron is predeceased by, the love of his life Helen, son Norman in infancy, and his parents Marjorie and Norman.
A special thanks to Dr. Ibriham, Dr. Kisselgoff, Dr. Chan, Dr. Sellick, and the nursing staff of 2C, for your care and compassion.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial reception for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, January 28th, at Everest Westfort Chapel from 6-8pm (420 Gore St. W.)
