Ross Judge, aged 74, died with family at his side at TBRHSC on Wednesday, July 3, 2013. Ross was born in Port Arthur on October 4, 1938. He attended Pine Street elementary school, Port Arthur, followed by high school at Bishop's College School, Lennoxville, Quebec and Grade 13 at Port Arthur Collegiate Institute. Ross continued his education at Trinity College, University of Toronto and at Queen's University. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree, he entered Osgoode Hall Law School graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree, earning the Northern Ontario Prize, in June l965. After articling in Fort William, Ross was called to the Bar in 1967. He worked for Callon, Pustina, Zelinski & McKitrick before opening his own practice in partnership with Jack McCartney in 1969. After the appointment of Jack McCartney to the Superior Court of Justice, in 1996 Ross merged his firm with Weiler, Maloney, Nelson, where he continued to practice until July 2, 2013. In 1969, immediately before launching his law partnership, Ross began his 44 year marriage partnership with Cynthia. They were married by Special Licence at St. Mary's Church, North Mymm's , Hertfordshire, and then toured around England before returning home to Thunder Bay. Although Ross thoroughly enjoyed several trips through North America and overseas over the years, as well as his time as a student in Toronto, his heart was always firmly rooted in the Lakehead. Ross was committed to serving the community he loved so well. Ross' long term volunteer work included many roles: long time member (since 1969) and past president of the Rotary Club of Thunder Bay (Fort William); long time board member (30 years) and past president of the United Way of Thunder Bay; former member of the Board of Governors for the United Way of Ontario; former Chairman of the Trillium Grant Management Committee; former long time member and past president of the Thunder Bay Community Foundation; former president of the Thunder Bay Family and Credit Counselling Agency; former director of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce; former director of the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition; former long time member and past president of the Amethyst Harbour Campers Association; former member of the Ontario Parole Board; and a former director of the Thunder Bay Fish and Game Association. In recognition of his community service, Ross was one of 25 citizens presented with the City of Thunder Bay Silver Achievement Award on the 25th anniversary of the creation of the city of Thunder Bay. Ross was also awarded the Thunder Bay Law Association Service Award in 2002, the Spirit of Thunder Bay Award in 2008, and the Ontario Volunteer Service award in 2012-13. Ross also thoroughly enjoyed the many outdoor pursuits this community has to offer, in particular having been for many years a keen downhill skier (and a curler in his younger years) in the winter, avid hunter in the fall, and enthusiastic boater in the summertime with many happy trips with his family to Hoorigan Bay on the Giant (in calm weather and rough!). Ross was also an enthusiastic supporter of the recreational efforts of his four children as they grew up in Thunder Bay. Ross loved to play bridge, having been a dedicated duplicate bridge player with his brother Vance for several years as a young man, and later much enjoyed monthly recreational games for 25 years with fellow Rotarians and spouses, Doug and Lorraine Wells, Ross and Ness Young, David and Eileen Murray, and his partner Cynthia. Ross will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Cynthia, his daughter Karen, his son Robert, his son David and daughter-in-law Veronica, and his son Michael and daughter-in-law Kristi, and his six grandchildren: Daniel Ross and Michael Richard, Reese and Sarah, and Riley and Henry. He will also be missed by many nephews and nieces. Ross was predeceased by his parents Robert Henry Judge and Sybil Grenier Judge (Soper), and his brothers Gordon and Vance Judge. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Anglican Church (Ridgeway St. E.) with the Reverend Archdeacon Deborah Kraft officiating. In lieu of flowers, if friends and family so desire, donations may be made to the United Way of Thunder Bay or the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation. A tree will be planted in memory of Ross Judge in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service Sunday, June 8, 2014. On-line Condolences may be sent
