Born: October 6, 1937, Winnipeg, MB Died: April 21, 2025, Lakeridge Health Oshawa, ON
With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Ruth Elizabeth Flatt, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, who left us on April 21, 2025, at Lakeridge Health Oshawa.
Born Ruth Elizabeth McKenzie on October 6, 1937, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, she was the cherished daughter of George McKenzie and Marion (née Kline).
On December 28, 1957, she married her devoted partner, Rupert John Flatt, with whom she built a warm and loving home until his passing on August 15, 1994.
Ruth's professional life reflected her versatility and dedication. Beginning as a receptionist in real estate and legal offices, she later earned her real estate licence and helped families find their homes. In Thunder Bay, she advanced to assistant manager of two major shopping malls, where her organizational skill and warm demeanour endeared her to colleagues and patrons alike.
An active member of her community, Ruth served along side her husband at Slate River Baptist Church in Slate River, Ontario, before moving to Oshawa, where she attended Calvary Baptist Church until 2019.
Above all, Ruth's greatest pride was her family. She and Rupert raised four loving children:
Karen Lundy (husband Chris Lundy)
Robert "Jack" Flatt (partner Jenny Hill)
Andrew Flatt (deceased May 10, 2013; wife Theresa Flatt deceased October 21, 2010)
Daryl Coupland (husband Brian Coupland)
She cherished her seven grandchildren Duncan, Ryan, Amy, Thomas, Josiah, Katy, and Alex and showered them with cookies, hand-made dolls and Christmas ornaments, and childhood stories. Her love extended further to six great-grandchildren: Brendan, Lily, James,
Zack, Tavish, and Mackenzie, each of whom brought her immense joy and pride.
Those who knew Ruth best remember her for her kindness, hard work, love of laughter, and warm hospitality. Whether cultivating her beloved wildflower garden or hosting large get togethers of friends and family, she radiated a sense of welcome and joy to all
who gathered.
Ruth is survived by her brother, George McKenzie (wife Mary); her three living children and their spouses; her seven grandchildren; her six great-grandchildren; and a wide circle of cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Rupert John Flatt (August 22, 1994); her son, Andrew Flatt (May 10, 2013); her daughter-in-law, Theresa Flatt (October 21, 2010): and her brother Stan Mckenzie (February 2025).
Service Details: A visitation and funeral service will be held at Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home, 53 Division Street North, Bowmanville, on May 9th. Visitation begins at 10am, service at 11am, followed by a private family internment in Thunder Bay alongside her husband, Rupert John Flatt, later this summer.
For those who are unable to attend, the service will be viewable via livestream at the following link:
