SHIRLEY HENDEL Obituary

SHIRLEY MAE HENDEL
With saddened hearts we share the passing of Shirley Mae Hendel after enduring a few medical challenges. Born in Regina Saskatchewan July 28, 1936, passing in Thunder Bay March 16, 2025.

She was predeceased by her husband George Hendel (married 70 years), Mother to Kim (Larry), James (Wendy), predeceased by Patrice (Brian), Grandmother to Erin (Andrew), Kayla (Zach), Jonathan (Kate), Alexander, Rachel (Alex) and Jacob, Great Grandmother to Olivia and Emma. Shirley is the Daughter of Dave and Hilda Rempel (predeceased).

At an early age her family moved to Kitchener Ontario where she attended and became an organist for the local congregation of the New Apostolic Church. A few years later she married and supported her husband, George who was a Minister in the Church and soon after they started their family. In August 1966 they moved to Thunder Bay (Port Arthur) to further the local New Apostolic Church work which they dedicated their life to and she continued her musical/choir directing talent for 70 years. She also shared business ownership with her husband for many years until they sold and retired years later.

Shirley always was looking for an adventure by travelling to many locations around the world, enjoying different foods and befriending many people with her sense of humor, wit and caring nature. Shirley's greatest joy was hosting her guests with great food, conversation and with any cocktail someone was willing to make.

Many thanks to the nurses and doctors at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital and Renal Clinic for their care and compassion. Thank you to Jasper Place for all your help, care and housing. Much appreciation to Harbourview Funeral Centre for your help and understanding through this process.

Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, April 12th at 5pm. New Apostolic Church, 639 Van Norman St. Thunder Bay, ON. Reception to follow service.

I remember when we were in her home for a meal and we would say we couldn´t eat another bite. Her response always was " You didn´t gain it here. You´re not losing it here". Always made us laugh.

Kim & Family: I truly enjoyed working with your Dad George. And meeting your family including your Mom on your many visits when I worked with him. I also enjoyed the fact that we knew each other before we knew each other. Both of your parents were such wonderful people. I am so very sorry for your loss. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Kim, I was shocked and saddened to read about your dear mom´s passing. You two were like sisters; you will miss her greatly. She was such a vibrant person; I very much enjoyed her presence in the Equality Rocks Chorus, and from afar in the Community Choir. Her smile and her wit always brought cheer to everyone around her. My deepest condolences to you in your loss.
