SHIRLEY ANNE HYSLOP ( nee BOOTE)
It is with deep sadness that the family of Shirley Anne Hyslop announce her passing on May 6, 2024, at the age of 87.
Shirley was born in Crystal City, Manitoba, growing up on the family farm near LaRiviere. She attended Mountain School, LaRiviere High School, and Pilot Mound Collegiate. During high school, Shirley contracted polio and, despite the seriousness of the illness, recovered and went on to graduate. She continued with post-secondary studies and received her diploma as a laboratory technologist with the Manitoba government. As a lab technologist, both in training and in practice, she had the opportunity to work in many hospitals in Manitoba, Arizona, and Connecticut. She eventually settled in Fort William to work at McKellar Hospital in 1961.
In 1963, Shirley married her long-time sweetheart Clinton Hyslop whom she met years earlier in Pilot Mound. They had one son and two daughters and Shirley left work for several years to raise the children. In 1980, Shirley attended Confederation College and graduated with her Secretarial Arts diploma. She returned to work, starting at St Paul's Anglican church as a secretary and then went on to hold various positions with the City of Thunder Bay and retired from TBayTel in 1997.
Shirley was an active member of St. Paul's Anglican Church as president of the Altar Guild and held positions on the Advisory Board. Shirley was the Akela of the Cub Troup at 16th Fort William for several years. She also volunteered her time reading with children in various schools including St. Martins, Rosslyn Road, and Westmount.
Family was the cornerstone of Shirley's life. Each summer was a new adventure, camping and travelling across Canada and into the states. As well, the annual summer trip to visit family and friends in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba. Shirley was her children's biggest fan, rarely missing a sporting event, from football and track and field, to basketball, volleyball and soccer, school plays and music recitals. One of Shirley's greatest passions was her backyard garden, growing fresh vegetables and beautiful flowers. Time spent with her grandchildren was among her most cherished moments. Her other interests included golfing, sewing, quilting, antiquing, furniture refinishing, needlepoint, and reading.
She is survived by husband Clinton, children Jeff (Lisbeth) and their children, Brandon (Ashley and great granddaughter Adalyn), Conor, and Jasmine Tenhave (Kurtis), Paula Picard and her daughters, Madelaine and Chelsea, and Catherine Poddubny and her sons, Jacob and Carter. Shirley was also blessed with many nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Percy and Orpha (nee Jackson) Boote, her brothers James and Robert Boote, and sister Berniece Adams.
The family would like to thank the staff at Southbridge Pinewood for their excellent care of Shirley in her final years.
A memorial service is planned for early July 2024.
