Shirley Ellen Doreen MacLeod peacefully passed at the age of 70 on Wednesday, July 21, 2021. Shirl is preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Joseph Charles; her siblings, Irene, Alice, Gladys, June, Frank and Ken; her husband, Ken Alexander MacLeod of Stornoway; and her daughter, Sheila. She is survived by her sons; Scott and his wife, Melissa; Shane; Stuart and his partner, Daryl; her grandchildren, Ronin, Ash and Baron; and her animal companions, Star and Luna.
Shirl was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario on October 16, 1950 and was the youngest of seven siblings. She married Ken in 1970. Together, they built their home with their own hands and raised four children. They were proud and loving parents who celebrated their children's achievements, and encouraged them to grow and succeed. Shirl was an incredibly strong, courageous, loving, caring and talented soul, with a spirit that lit up every room she was in. Her resilience allowed her to triumph over cancer twice and persevere through the passing of her husband, Ken and her daughter, Sheila. She was a beautiful human being with an abundance of talents. Along with being an exceptional mother, friend, partner and working professional, she was also a published poet and an artist who crafted her dream home. Her biggest passion is singing, which she often shared with the people she loved. She earned several accolades from showcasing her talents in the forms of trophies, plaques and cash prizes. Considered as a mom to many in the family, she loved all her nieces and nephews, and viewed them as her own children. She cherished the memories she made with loves ones, often capturing fleeting moments through photos, videos and hand-written notes. She lived a full life with no regrets and in her final moments, was gracious in accepting what was to come.
As she is reunited with her family in Heaven, we invite you to join us in celebrating Shirl's life on Saturday, October 2, 2021, 10 am at Grace Church with Celebrant Diane Axent Officiating. Masks and social distancing required.
Knowing our mom, we are certain that she will be watching and singing along. She requested that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to honour her life can make donations to the Canadian Cancer Society and/or Canadian Liver Foundation in memory of Sheila.

My heart and thoughts are with all who knew and loved 'Auntie Shirley'. She and my mom met before my birth; she was the MoH when my parents married and one of my favourite adults, growing up.
I'm thankful that in saying farewell to my mom early last year, I got to say 'Hello!' to Shirley again and share a few hugs and catch up after many years.
May all of you find the same comfort and support in one another that I always found in her company - as a young girl - and when last we saw each other.
With most sincere sympathy,
Joanne (and my dad, Pat) Donohue
