SHIRLEY SHAW Obituary
December 10, 1927 - December 2, 2023
Shirley Norma Shaw, 95, passed away on December 2, 2023 at St. Joseph's Hospice with her family by her side. Our family is saddened by the loss of our matriarch yet grateful knowing that Shirley is finally at peace. Shirley was born in Fort William on December 10, 1927 to Florence (Gray) and Thomas Kirk. She spent her early years in the Westfort area, and it was here that she met her future husband Robert Shaw. It was a friendship and marriage that spanned close to 90 years. The family moved to Vickers Heights when her father started working at Mountain View Cemetery. Shirley attended Francis Street School and then attended Selkirk Vocational School for a short time. During World War II, Shirley fibbed about her age and quit school in grade 10 to work at Canada Car. She became a "Rosie the Riveter". After the war she worked at Bryan's and Chapples. On September 3, 1947 Shirley married her longtime friend and love Rob Shaw. When their daughter Valerie was born Shirley became a stay at home Mom. Later she started working at Sears and worked there till taking an early retirement. Shirley and Rob were fortunate to be able to spend 12 winters in New Port Richey Florida where they made many friends. Their time was spent golfing, going on excursions and going to Blue Jays games. Unfortunately, this past January, after 75 years of marriage, Rob passed away. Shirley missed him terribly and 11 months later she joined her beloved. We can hear their reunion - "Hel-looo Shirley" "Hel-looo Rob" which was their greeting for each other almost every morning. Shirley is survived by her daughter Valerie Barten; her granddaughter Robyn Johnston (Leo Brown) and great granddaughters Gabryelle and Jesyca Johnston; her grandson Rob Barten and wife Melissa Helwig of Halifax; nieces Allison (Carol) and Alyssa Kirk. Predeceased by her parents Florence and Thomas Kirk, her brother and sister-in-law Harry and Sophie Kirk, her son-in-law Paul Barten. A special thank you to the staff of Glacier Ridge and Paramed angels Monika and Carolyn for their care of Shirley while she was at Glacier and especially during this difficult time. Thank you to the staff at TBRHSC and St. Joseph's Hospice who showed such compassion towards her. A special thank you to Shirley's long time physician Dr. C. Allison for his care and to "the new guy" Dr. M. Falconi. Also thank you to family and friends for their love and support during this difficult year. Cremation has taken place and internment will take place in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations to George Jeffreys Children's Foundation in memory of Shirley would be greatly appreciated. She will be forever loved and forever remembered. Arrangements entrusted to the Blake Funeral Chapel, 200 May Street South.
