SHIRLEY STANKEY
With broken hearts and profound sadness, we announce the unexpected passing of Shirley Marie Stankey on Saturday, November 25, 2023.
Shirley was born to Anne and Nicholas Waruk on April 11, 1941 in Port Arthur, Ontario. Shirley was a beautiful and loving person and even more so a loving mother to her beautiful daughters, Susan and Sadie, whom she shared with former husband Edward Stankey. Shirley put being a mother first and foremost and put her daughters above all else. Throughout her life, she worked various jobs in her community, but her favourite job was working as a Server at the Prosvita Hall on Simpson Street. In her personal time, Shirley loved to cook (and was very good at it), especially traditional Ukrainian dishes such as homemade perogies and cabbage rolls, homemade raspberry jam, Borscht, chicken fried rice, and a special potato and meat pie. Shirley was an avid Nascar fan, always cheering on her favourite driver #5 Kyle Larson, and never missed an episode of the Price is Right. Shirley was a big Elvis fan and always had his Blue Hawaii movie on repeat. She loved to collect dolls and also had a big heart for animals, big and small - she loved them all. Shirley had a great sense of humor and always made her family smile even during the hardest times.
Shirley will forever be missed by her daughters Susan Buitenhuis (John) and Sadie Wenk (Ron), granddaughters Sherry Minnella (Carmen), Ashley Holland (Cory) and Brittany Wenk (Micheal Vis), great-grandchildren Luca and Alia Minnella, sisters Joyce O'Shaunessey and Germaine Carter, brother Brent Waruk (Mavis), and numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her parents Anne and Nicholas Waruk, grandparents Alexander and Katharina Marak, former husband Edward Stankey, long-time partner Joe Ulakovic, and numerous aunts and uncles.
A private family ceremony will be held on the afternoon of Friday, December 1, 2023 in care of Harbourview Funeral Centre. Donations may be made in Shirley's name to any animal charity, preferably, No Dogs Left Behind.
