Sirkka Liimatainen Obituary

August 7, 1926 –
December 4, 2021

The family of Sirkka Liimatainen announces with great heartbreak the passing of their mother, who died peacefully, at home, with her daughters holding her hands, on December 4, 2021. She was born in Viipuri, Finland, but grew up in Helsinki. Sirkka was a journalist and an editor working for the Finnish Broadcasting Company in Finland and later moved to Canada to work for a Finnish language newspaper ‘Canadan Uutiset'.

During her life, Sirkka also worked for the Red Cross in Austria helping Hungarian Refugees and lots of people in need. She spoke fluent Finnish, Hungarian, Swedish, German, and English. She also used her language skills as a translator for the President of Finland, and she also travelled the world extensively while she was in charge of program export for the Finnish Broadcasting Company.

Sirkka was predeceased by her father Edwin Hietamies in 1926, her new born son Attila in 1946, her husband Matti Liimatainen in 1968, her mother Tyyne Hietamies in 1996, her sister Aune Kahkonen in 2003.

Sirkka is survived, and greatly missed by her daughters Kinga Zongor in Sweden, Outi Skaf, and Heidi Liimatainen (James Creighton), and her beloved grandchildren Sebastien Skaf and Laila Skaf.

Our deepest love goes with you, rest in peace
Mom-Grammy.
