SONJA RYDER Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sonja Ryder (Thomson) at TBRHSC on February 22, 2026, surrounded by family, after a brief and unexpected illness.

Sonja was born July 31,1935 in Port Arthur, Ontario, daughter of John and Elsa Thomson. She attended Pine St. School and P.A.T.S., later working as a secretary for various employers, including the Department of Lands and Forests, where she met her future husband and partner of 61 years, Dick Ryder.

Sonja was a splashy, colourful and tasteful dresser, angora and sequins once being her favourite combo. She was a most loving Baba, adored her four grandchildren and was a self-described "news junkie". She was social and friendly, never losing her deep love for travel, right up to the very end as she inquired about others' upcoming trips. She travelled extensively, with Hawaii holding a special place in her heart. In later years, Sonja particularly enjoyed river cruises booked regularly with friends and family. Sonja proudly accomplished reaching 90, still living on her own and wheeling her walker one mile daily, in a concerted effort to remain in her condo.

Sonja will be lovingly remembered by daughter Vikki, son Jeff (Val), grandchildren Lauren, Devon (Brittany), Sam (Kayla) and Lana (Carter), sister-in-law Jan, as well as niece Karen and nephews Jim and Craig. She was predeceased by husband Dick, parents John and Elsa, brother Bert, mother-in-law Mabel, in-laws Barb and Bill, nephew Callum and son-in-law Terry. We would like to sincerely thank the excellent staff at TBRHSC for their kind and compassionate care of Sonja.

As per Sonja's wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be a private family Celebration of Life at a later date. Should friends so desire, donations may be made to the Charity of Your Choice.

Vikki and family - I am so saddened to learn of your mom's passing. I was just chatting with her a few weeks ago and updating her regarding my mom, at that time. They were friends for many years and had stayed in touch. Sending you condolences from myself and my sisters.
