Suzanne Chong, aged 94 years, passed away peacefully at TBRHSC on Friday, June 3, 2011. Suzanne was born in Canton, China on July 7, 1916. She married Arthur Chong and emigrated to Canada in 1949, settling in Toronto for ten years before moving to Thunder Bay in 1959. In 1965, she, her husband and mother started the family business Hong Kong Restaurant on Vickers and Victoria. It quickly became the teenagers' meeting place complete with juke box, milkshakes and home-made burgers and fries. The teens affectionately called Suzanne 'Ma' and dad 'Pops'. Suzanne always welcomed friends and acquaintances to the restaurant, offering them a coffee or coke, something to eat and some conversation. Suzanne was a terrific cook and food was a passion for her. Her mom (granny) was her companion cook. Together they would put on dinner parties for a large crowd of appreciative family and friends. In her retirement years, Suzanne liked to travel and connect with friends the world over. Her Christmas card list exceeded 100, and that is an indication of how many lives she has touched. She will be sadly and deeply missed by her children, Allan (Donna), Alf (Su-enne), Susan Bain, Lilly Ting (Colin), God-son John Chan (Chai) and family, and grandchildren Bryan Bain, Nicholas Chong and Samantha Chong, as well as numerous relatives and friends in Canada, U.S. and Hong Kong. Suzanne was predeceased by her husband Arthur, and mother Sam in 1983, as well as son-in-law Rory Bain in 2000. Special thanks are extended to her medical caregivers, Dr. N. Krupa, Dr. C. Lai, and the staff of TBRHSC. A celebration of Suzanne's life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Jenkens Funeral Home, 226 South Syndicate Ave. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until time of the service. Donations to the Northern Hearts Fund or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
