Tai-Chun Cheng

We are saddened to share the passing of Tai-Chun Cheng, known simply as “Tai” to his friends. He passed on January 6, 2023 at the age of 85 years. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Hera Hsiu Cheng, his daughters Chialin Cheng (Daniel Fass), Chiachen Cheng (William Harris), and his grandchildren Caitlin, Megan Fass; Alex, David and Emily Harris. Tai was the eldest of four children, the filial son of Yen Nan Cheng and Te Ching Kang Cheng. Predeceased by his brother (Jason Cheng), survived by sister (Ching-yi Chen) and brother (Matthew Cheng). Tai worked to sponsor his young family to start their lives in Canada in 1975. With Hera, they successfully raised their daughters and lived almost 50 years in Toronto. At work in civil engineering firms, Tai contributed to many building projects, including the design of Ontario's Darlington Power Plant. In his free time, Tai loved basketball, gourmet cooking (he was famous for his smoked chicken, Peking duck, and Chinese buns). Tai was passionate about duplicate bridge, and proud Life Master with American Contract Bridge League (ACBL). In his retirement, Tai became an advanced scholar of Chinese Medicine. To all who knew Tai during his many years in Toronto, he attained a well-earned reputation for generosity. Tai learned and mastered new skills in order to help others; handyman skills for friends in need of home improvement, noodle dish and bread-making skills for those in need of nourishment, and framing skills to beautifully encase the brush painting artwork of his wife. In March 2020, he made Thunder Bay his new home as the world-wide pandemic prevented him from returning to his home in Toronto. Since 2015, the Thunder Bay Duplicate Bridge Club became a fixture of his social life, especially his favourite bridge partner, Fraser Cull. Tai was baptized in May 2021 at St. Paul's United Church in Thunder Bay. The family gratefully acknowledge the care Tai received from the NW Palliative Care Team, especially Dr. Kevin Miller and Mr. Donald Hutchison. Also, Dr. Jeremy Mozzon for providing primary care. Tai's sister-in-law (Hsiu Shyan Liu) and brother-in-law (Timothy Liu) for guiding his spiritual journey with their weekly bible study over the past two years. Special recognition to Mary Ann Elliott who was so kind and compassionate, especially during Tai's final days. There will be a private family burial in Cincinnati, Ohio in June 2023, at his final resting place. In lieu of flowers, donations are gratefully accepted at Canadian Red Cross, St. Paul's United Church (Thunder Bay), Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation or Hospice Northwest Services.
