Thomas Hotrum Obituary

It is with profound sorrow that the family of Thomas Arthur Hotrum announce his passing into the next realm. With love, memories and family by his side, Tom passed away peacefully at St. Joseph's Hospice Care on May 25, 2021. Born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1951 to Arthur and Elizabeth Hotrum, Tom's youthful years were spent exploring his world and later found a passion for muscle cars, as many of his age did. At 22, he would meet the woman who would change his life forever, someone who would show him a life he never thought possible. That was when he met Isabella, his future wife and his one true love. And in 1977, Tom and Isabella moved their family to Thunder Bay. It's in Northern Ontario that Tom discovered his love for the outdoors. As an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer, Tom quickly made the North his home. He accepted employment at the Thunder Bay Public Library as a custodian and thirty-five years later, he retired as the departmental head of facilities. Tom is survived by his one true love, Isabella, his three sons James (Lee-Ann), Andrew (Amanda), and Jason (Chelsea). Tom was a proud Poppa to four grandchildren, Holten, Isabella, Grady and John Thomas. In addition, Tom leaves behind a loving sister Linda (Rick) and brother Rick, as well as many nieces and nephews. Tom was also a father to more than just his family. He was a loving and compassionate man who never stopped trying his best, and always saw the best in others. A special thank you to the TBRHSC intensive care unit and St. Joseph's Hospice Care for their dedication, support and compassion during a decidedly difficult time. At Tom's request, there will be no funeral service but a celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the TBRHSC Respiratory Clinic, St. Joseph's Hospice Care, or The Salvation Army.

"Of my friend,
I can only say this:
of all the souls I have
encountered in my life,
his was the most human."

Tom is our brother-in-law. He walked me down the aisle the day I married my husband Bob, (45 yrs ago). I remember saying to him, from the corner of my mouth as we walked,"you're standing on my dress". Tried not to laugh as we carried on. There is a beautiful picture of Tom and I outside sitting on the steps looking totally wiped out. He will be missed by all who loved him, no matter how far apart they were from each other. My Daughter Tiffany and I loved having Tom as a Supervisor . I remember in my job interview how I thought he looked like Santa Claus to which he gave a hearty laugh. Tom was a kind and extremely funny man whose smile and twinkly eyes could light up a room. Tiffany and I send our deepest sympathies to Isabella and family.

Dear Isabel and family,
Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the loss of Tom. Was so very sad to read of his passing in today’s paper. We have so many wonderful memories of our time being neighbours on Rankin St. We fondly remember how Tom would become our very own Santa at Christmas time, a role that came so natural for him. I know our son will never forget that either. Tom brightened the lives of all those who were fortunate enough to be his friend and he certainly will be missed. Sending you loving thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

I worked with Tom at TBPL for 30 years and knew him and Isabel well. He was quick to laughter, was generous of spirit and had a kind heart. I miss you, big guy - and wish you Godspeed.
