TOMMY MIYATA Obituary
TOMMY TADASHI MIYATA
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our father Tommy on August 15, 2025 at the TBRH after a brief and sudden illness.
Tommy was born October 24, 1938 in Port Alice, BC. At the onset of World War II, the family settled in their new home in Fort William, (Thunder Bay). Growing up Tommy enjoyed sports, particularly hockey and bowling. After graduating to Journeyman in 1963, Tommy worked in the sheet metal trade and he was proud to serve as a member of the local Sheet Metal Union for over 60 years. In this industry he was known for his years of dedication, craftmanship and leadership working as Shop Foreman for the Racco family at Rugged Air Systems in Thunder Bay.
In 1977 Tommy married the love of his life Judy. Over the years they enjoyed their many trips to Las Vegas with family and friends, camping, fishing, picking blueberries and searching for the elusive Japanese Maitake mushrooms, and hosting annual barbecues with his close circle of loyal friends. Tommy volunteered his time to minor hockey with the Thunder Bay Beavers Hockey Association. These simple pleasures brought him great joy and reflected his deep appreciation for nature, his friends and Japanese culture. Tommy's most cherished moments were spent with family, gathering for the annual golf tournaments followed by an evening of laughter and dinner. New Year's Day was always a favorite spent with the family and having an amazing dinner to bring in the new year.
He will be remembered for his quiet strength, unwavering kindness and the deep love he held for his family. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him and were touched by his warmth and wisdom.
Tommy is survived by his daughters, Lorrie and Kathy, son-in-law Phil (Cooke). He was a proud grandfather to Amanda, Chelsea (Michael), Tyler and Dayna (Ken) and a cherished great-grandfather to Eliza & George Cadesky-Cooke and Thomasin & Jack McNair.
He is survived by his siblings Theresa (Gordon) Takenaka, Rae (Helmuth) Basler, Kaz (Cathy) Miyata, Julie (Robert) Revell. Tommy was a beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews David (Lesley), Lynn (Travis), Michael, Stephen, Sarah (Zack) and Kellen (Megan). Great Uncle to Jennifer, Jaime, Kyra, Taylor, Tommy, Brooklyn and Everley.
Tommy was predeceased by his beloved wife Judy (1996) and his parents Takehiko and Yemi Miyata.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be arranged at a later date followed by a private interment at Sunset Memorial.
