Trish Montemuro Obituary

May 29, 1952 - April 6, 2022

Trish passed away in hospital in London, England, with her sister Suzanne at her side and Maureen's comforting words in her ear via telephone. As with all her endeavours Trish faced the end of life with courage and an equanimity born of her lifelong struggle with the effects of childhood polio, which she refused to let define or limit her. She made friends easily and for life.

After attending Corpus Christi Elementary School and Port Arthur Collegiate Institute in Thunder Bay, Trish spent a year waiting on tables at The Banff Centre with her friend Cherie Tamblyn. She attended community college in Toronto where she qualified as a correctional officer and worked for some years at the Ontario Correctional Institute.

In the mid 1970s Trish attended Carleton University in Ottawa to complete a B.A. Upon graduation she worked at the University library. During this time she became involved in amateur and professional theatre and then surprised her family by enrolling in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in England to study Technical Theatre and Stage Management.

Trish went on to have a long and successful career as a senior stage manager at the National Theatre where she became good friends with many actors, directors, playwrights, and other luminaries of the London arts world.

Her favourite hobby was sailing and she was a longtime member of the Greenwich Yacht Club on the river Thames. Her heart, though, remained in Thunder Bay and she returned most summers to visit family and friends at camp on Lake Superior.

Predeceased by parents (Tommy and Josephine) and sister (Kathleen), Trish is survived by older sisters (Maureen, Suzanne); younger brothers (Michael, Paul, John); nephew (Reg); nieces (Kate, Michelle, Suzanne, Kathleen, Patricia); and nine grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

A memorial service and interment will take place in Thunder Bay in the summer.

I met Trish in Ottawa through Lesley Bell while attending Carleton. She was a wonderful person. I took a few photos back then - see attached.

I am devastated to stumble upon Trish´s obituary. She was my favourite cousin on the Herringer side of the family. I cherished the summers I spent with her in Amethyst Harbour. So many memories, her first mile swim at Amethyst Harbour, she was so fierce. Cheering on Bobby Weiler at tennis. Trish chewing on steak ones before giving them to Blackball, the dog! The laughs we had at 13 years old visiting Maple Creek Saskatchewan and on and on. My deepest condolences to Maureen, Suzanne, Michael, Paul and John. Trish was a bright light!

I taught Trish at RADA and we became close friends. We then worked at The National Theatre together and remained in touch for many years afterwards but, sadly, we hadn't seen each other or caught up for the last few years and I am so very sorry to hear of her death - and only heard this today. She will be very much missed. She was also so bright and funny, with a twinkle in her eye, and we laughed a lot together. She was also a great Stage Manager. I'm sorry that she was taken so early but she lived life to the full and I know that she made the very most of every day she was with us. My heart goes out to her family. See you on the other side Trish. Don't forget me. With all love, Martyn Hayes x

I didn't know. News of Trish passing in April brings me immediately (as it does for many of us) back to Summit Avenue...PACI...and probably most of all...Amethyst Ballpark...the beach roads and...camp. Trish owned part of the best memories possible for each of those places, and they will live forever in my heart and my shared experience. Maureen, Suzanne, Michael, Paul and John...having Trish in your lives was surely the best of times. She makes me feel that time is even more precious for all of us these days, so let's not take anything for granted. Thanks, Trish.

Trish and I became fast friends as very young children where we loved to swim and water-ski together at Amethyst Harbour, then body surf the rapids of the MacKenzie River. Winters were for skiing. Great times were had at Loch Lomond. In later years, we continued our friendship, visiting in Ottawa, Stratford, Toronto, Hamilton, Collingwood, Mississauga, Bayfield, London England, Amethyst Harbour and Birch Beach.
Trish loved sailing. Her incredible talent included building a sailboat. Every sheet, cleat, sail, mast, and rudder, upholstery etc. was handmade by Trish and a friend. She loved to cruise and race "Blue Moon". Home port was Greenwich Yacht Club. Trish loved her career at the National Theatre. She took me on a tour and showed me the hydrolic lift that rode her up, down around 5 stories of the Theatre to create sets for the plays she staged. Trish was brilliant, fun and unique. I will miss her flair and friendship. My condolences to all who loved her. RIP Trisha.

Dave and I were so sorry to hear of Trish's passing. She was beautiful soul and when I think of her, I see her bright, big smile and sparkling eyes. I remember her vibrant voice full of joy and positivity. And her flowing capes and robes - she was a dresser!

I remember Trish as Suzanne´s younger sister who always had a smile when she was young and I thought she had a strong independent nature. I enjoyed hearing about her successful career from her proud sister. We all came from strong living families and my deepest sympathy goes out to all of hers. I know it was difficult for all of them to see their sister in pain. May she Rest In Peace. I was so proud to have known someone from Thunder Bay who followed her dreams all the way to England.

I still have vivid memories of Trish, how cheery she always seemed when we often walked home from high school over half a century ago. R.I.P. Trish!

Trish and I never worked together, but I know she was greatly admired and respected by her colleagues, onstage and off. She dealt with her illness with great courage and humour. May she rest in peace.
