With heavy hearts, the family of Vera Kovacic, age 90, announce her peaceful passing at St. Joseph's Hospice on Friday, October 3, 2025 with family by her side.
Vera was born on June 21, 1935 in Slovenia. Here is where she met her future husband, Albin. At age 21, Vera moved away from home and worked as a server at a refugee camp in Cremona, Italy, then moved to Rome, Italy to work as a cook for a private family. She did this until June 1959 when she came to Canada to be reunited with Albin, who was preparing for two years for her arrival. They married two weeks later. They were married for 63 years and raised two children, Robert and Lillian (Richard) and welcomed two beautiful granddaughters, Renee (Max) and Megan (Dillon) into their lives.
Vera worked in the mornings as a housekeeper, for many families, which developed into many wonderful friendships, but she always made sure she was home in the afternoons for us, when we arrived from school, with early dinners on the table every night. Feeding 'everyone' was always her passion. Whether it was at home or catching the bus to go to Kresge's for fries with gravy and milkshakes or going 'swimming' at the concrete pool at the Casino Grounds, where we ate her well packed lunches, she always made sure we were never hungry.
Vera was always happiest at home being a wife, mom, proud grandma and friend to everyone. Her smile was like no other. She celebrated a Happy and Wonderful 90th Birthday in June, with a little neighbourhood surprise party, but her biggest joy was seeing her granddaughter, Renee, getting married in August in Our Lady of Loretto Church, where Vera was a long time CWL member. She wore her beautiful smile from morning to night. We will forever cherish these beautiful memories. She was always the rock of our family and took great care of our dad until his final days, three years ago, but slowly handed the torch to us after his passing.
Vera was predeceased by her husband, Albin, her two infant children, her mom and dad and all her siblings in Slovenia. Being the last surviving sibling, she always kept in touch with family overseas, especially her two nieces, Neva and Silva.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:30am on Friday, October 10, 2025 at Our Lady of Loretto R.C. Church, 290 Grenville Avenue, officiated by Father Francis Pudicherry. Visitation will be one hour prior.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the
Charity of Your Choice would be greatly appreciated.
Rest in Peace, Mom
