Victor Baskin Obituary

May 6, 1935 ~ April 13, 2022

Victor “Viki B” Baskin, age 86, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2022 at Hogarth Riverview Manor with family by his side, after battling Parkinson's and Dementia over the past few years. A quiet man with a big presence, he was greatly loved and appreciated by his family and friends. Born in London, England half a mile from the Chelsea Football Ground, Vic was a devoted Chelsea fan for life. Vic and his family survived the bombings of WWII, and he went on to win a scholarship to an all-boys Grammar School. As a young man, Vic served in the transportation field of the Royal Air Force for five years, two of which he was stationed in Germany. Upon his return to England, he continued his work in the transportation field as a proud driver of the No. 93 double decker bus in London. He immigrated to Canada in 1969 and began his 29-year career at Great Lakes Paper Company (now Resolute Forest Products), where he worked in various positions, most recently as a Class A Welder. Vic was a dedicated member of his Union, Local 39 for 20 years, loyally fulfilling many roles, including serving as President, and as a member of the National Executive Board. Vic and his family lived in their home overlooking Vickers Park in Thunder Bay, Ontario for over 50 years. A loving father and husband, Vic enjoyed taking family vacations to the UK, Hawaii, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Florida and the Caribbean, as well as going on local adventures with the trailer. Vic also had memorable trips to Parksville, British Columbia to visit his son, daughter-in-law and grandsons. He shared his love of soccer with his children, and was involved in youth soccer as a coach, referee and proud parent. Vic was an active member of First Wesley United Church, and made many lasting friendships as a member of the church choir. Later in life, Vic loved playing bingo, and spending time with his grandchildren, who fondly referred to him as “Bumpa”. Vic is survived by Bette Jane, his wife of 38 years, sons Scott (Joy) and Michael (Carolyn Barr), daughter, Kimberly Begin (Jason), grandchildren Chris, Shaun, Nevynn, Maeve, Leo and Emersyn, and siblings in the United Kingdom, Edna Cullen, Ann Mayle, Alan (Pat), as well as extended family across the United Kingdom and Canada. He was predeceased by his parents, Vera and Myer. Vic's family would like to thank Dr. Brent Bukovy for years of outstanding care, and the wonderful staff and nurses at Hogarth Riverview Manor, Birch Unit for providing excellent care and compassion during Vic's time on the unit. Cremation has taken place and a private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PRO Kids to carry on Vic's contribution to youth sports, or to a charity of your choice.
