Vincent Eugene "Grip" Nicol, age 80 years, resident of Nipigon, passed away peacefully at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with his children by his side, on January 6, 2026. Vince was born on May 25, 1945 in Port Arthur, Thunder Bay. As part of a railroad family, Vince attended many elementary schools including Jackfish Public, Coldwell Public, Hurkett Public, Dorion Public then on to Nip-Rock District High School. Vince was a life-long employee of the MacMillan Bloedel Plywood Mill, having worked around 40 years as a Pettibone Operator, a position that he truly loved. Vince had the second highest seniority of the mill, just behind his younger brother until the mill burned down in 2007. Vince was an avid bowler at Sportsman Lanes, often putting up a high score and enjoyed boasting a bit about it. As his children were growing up, he was at every sporting event proud of their accomplishments, then onto his grandchildren watching all of their hometown hockey games. Into his later years, his enjoyment came from his daily coffee routine that took him from the Nipigon Café, to Tim Horton's then to Robin's Doughnuts where he would grab his coffee and sit in his vehicle and watch traffic go by, or sit at the Nipigon Marina. Besides enjoying coffee with his brothers, he made many coffee buddies and developed great friendships. Vince is survived by his children Lynn (Todd), Doug and Sherry (Ian), grandchildren Cole, Evan and Josh, great grandchildren Avia and Spencer, Siblings Levina Collins, Irwin (Linda) and Marden "Shorty" (Marcie), along with numerous nieces and nephews and the extended Ray family. He is predeceased by granddaughter Jordan, parents Eugene and Dorothy, brother-in-law Myrl Collins and numerous extended Ray family members. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of life will take place on Friday, January 30th, 2026 at the Nipigon Legion, from 1-3 pm where friends and family are invited to visit and remember "Grip" and the good ole days. Refreshments will be provided. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
