VINKO BOBAN Obituary

In Loving Memory of VINKO BOBAN
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Vinko Boban, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, with family by his side.

Vinko was born in the village of Sovici, Croatia, where he developed the values of hard work, loyalty, and resilience that shaped every part of his life. In 1970, with just a $20 bill in his pocket and a dream for a better future, he made the courageous journey to Canada. Within a year, through sheer determination, he had found steady work, a place to live, and saved enough to bring over his beloved wife, Tonka, and their two children, Mirijana ("Maryann") and Drazen ("Dan"). A few years later, their family was complete with the arrival of their youngest son, Jozo ("Joe").

Vinko took great pride in his work and spent nearly 30 years at Northern Wood, where he became a skilled machinist. He retired in 2002 but never stopped sharing stories from his time there. He was one of the rare few who truly loved his job, and his passion for his craft and his colleagues was clear in every memory he shared.

A devoted family man, Vinko built not just one but three homes for his family over the years, each a labour of love and a symbol of his dedication. Always willing to lend a hand, he was known for his generous spirit, tireless work ethic, and ever-joyful presence. He was a gifted storyteller who loved to reminisce about the old days growing up in the village, bringing those memories to life with warmth, humour, and heart.

Vinko embraced life to the fullest. He made many return trips to his beloved Croatia and cherished the winters he spent in Florida. He had a deep appreciation for Canada, the country that gave him a new beginning and was immensely proud to call it home.

Above all, Vinko adored his grandchildren. They were his greatest joy, and he lit up whenever he spoke of them. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience that will live on in each of them.

Vinko is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Tonka; his daughter, Mirijana; and his son, Jozo (Rebeccah). He was predeceased by his son, Drazen (Melissa). He also leaves behind his treasured grandchildren, who meant the world to him: Andrej, Taya, Emily, Luka, Mae, Mikey, and Danny.

Funeral services will be held in the R. Leino Memorial Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre on Monday, July 7, 2025. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. presided by Rev. Mr. Pasquale Coccimiglio. Interment will take place in St. Andrew's Cemetery.

As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that Vinko has been reunited with his coffee crew, no doubt enjoying a cup and sharing a good story once again.
