Virginia Niro Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Virginia (Ginnie) M. Niro, age 85 years, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 27, 2010. Born on July 24, 1924 in Fort William, Ontario, she grew up in Kakabeka Falls, and moved to Atikokan with her husband, Andy, in 1951. Ginnie spent most of her married life raising her 5 children, and at the age of 46 years she pursued her life long dream. She graduated as a nurse in 1971 from La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ontario. After 19 years of service as an RNA at the Atikokan General, she and Andy retired to Thunder Bay. Ginnie was predeceased by her husband, Andy; parents, Dick and Alice Ditmars; and brothers, Lloyd and Terry Ditmars. She is survived by her stepmother, Jean Ditmars; and her siblings, Enid Alderdice (Jack); Clyde Ditmars (Blondina); Guy Ditmars (Vi); Kelly Ditmars; Sharon Brooks (Jim); and Brian Goddard (Maureen). Surviving children include Leslie Almgren (Wayne); Ronald Niro (Jan); Richard Niro; Susan Wragg (Glenn); and James Niro. She was also survived by 6 grandchildren, whom she adored - Gina Gagne (Brad); Heather Wheeler; Michael and Christopher Wragg; Jill and Ryan Niro, and one great granddaughter, Brittany Wheeler. She had many friends, but 2 in particular whom she loved - Evelyn Ashford and Lotte Piechota. Ginnie had a very active social life. She was a member and past Treasurer of the UCW at Wesley United Church and Rural 60 and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. Her passion for life included playing crib, watching curling and figure skating, and travelling. She loved and hosted many family dinners, and she was happiest with her family around her. She will be sadly missed by all. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 1:00 pm, on Saturday February 20, 2010 at Wesley United Church, 130 North Brodie Street, Thunder Bay, with Reverend Jan Stevenson officiating. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Society or Wesley United Church would be greatly appreciated. Online condolences may be made through www.nwfainc.com"
