Vittorio Costa Obituary

VITTORIO COSTA
It is with intense gratitude for a life well lived, but sadness for our loss, that we share the passing of Vittorio Costa peacefully at McCausland Hospital on January 21, 2026, at the age of 89. He was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather uncle and friend, whose love and wisdom touched the lives of all who knew him. Born in Siderno, Italy on May 15, 1936, he was the son of the late Francesco and Maria (Figliomeni) Costa.

Vittorio (Vic) grew up in a small town in Calabria Italy, where he lived with his parents, his sisters (Mecca, Rosa, Teresa, Ida) and brothers (Cosimo, Guiseppe, Vicenzio) enjoying fishing and farming. As a young man, Vic left his home in Italy to join his sister Rosa and brothers Vincenzio and Guiseppe in Schreiber. Upon his arrival, he initially resided with his brother Vincenzo and then with Vincenzo and his wife Serafina. He enjoyed the love and support of his family and with them, began a new life an ocean away from his home. He did not know the language or the country but happily made it his home.

Vic began work with the Department of Highways and then went on to enjoy a 42-year career with Kimberly Clark where he worked as a helper, a mason, a carpenter and lead-hand in the carpenter shop at the time of his retirement.

Vic enjoyed the outdoors and all the seasons that Canada and Northwestern, Ontario offered. In the summer, he enjoyed time at Selim, in his garden, caring for his yard and for many years he found great peace and pleasure in his boat on Lake Superior, and fishing inland lakes and rivers with his children, family and friends. In the fall he was always excited to plant garlic and make wine. In the winter he enjoyed shoveling and snow blowing his and his neighbours' driveways, snowmobiling and time at camp at Louise Lake. Spring was a time to prepare and look forward to new opportunities.

He was always so happy when friends, family, neighbours and loved ones stopped in to visit with him at his home, on his deck, in his garage or in the yard.

He received great joy in giving and sharing with his family and his community. Papa's pasta dinner with homemade meatballs and sauce was always a favorite family dinner.

Vic's family would like to express their sincere gratitude to all the staff at McCausland Hospital for the compassion, comfort and care that he received while there. In 2023, Vic lost his youngest son Alex. This was a tremendous loss for Vic. He is survived by his son Francis Costa (Laurie Anne) his grandchildren Jordan Costa (Jennifer), Krista (Chris) Martin, great-grandchildren Mackenzie, Ben and Rowyn Martin.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the Schreiber Recreation Centre at 100 Langworthy Street in Schreiber, on Saturday February 07 at 12:00 PM (noon).

"A true friend sticks close as a brother." For the many years of shared activities, work projects and talk of growing garlic and making wine, and growing family experiences your friendship will remain a treasured memory. Jim and Patricia
