William Hatley Obituary
Mr. William Harold (Bill) Hatley, age 68 years, passed away peacefully in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital-General on Saturday, September 27, 2003 with his family by his side. Bill fought a three year, ten month battle with lung cancer. The cancer conquered his body but NEVER defeated his spirit or his strong will to live. Born in Port Arthur to Edith and Harry Hatley in 1935, he attended local schools and then went into the construction trade. He was a forty year member of the Ironworkers Local 759, working at various locations throughout Northwestern Ontario. Bill was an Ironworker by trade but a carpenter by choice, creating beautiful pieces of cedar outdoor furniture for family and friends. He lived for the summers in his trailer at Longbow Lake, Kenora, fishing and sight-seeing on Lake of the Woods in his beloved boat "Liver Up", golfing at Beauty Bay, fire-side story-telling (some true) with our "Manitoba Family" of neighbours and many good friends from the U.S.A. Bill is survived by his wife Lorraine; step-son George (Shirley) Convey; step-daughter Karen Convey (Ross Smith); aunt Frances and uncle Melton Vezina; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Lois and Jack Laughton; sister-in-law Mary Hatley of Midland, ON; son-in-law Fred Steeves of Oshawa, ON; grandchildren: George Convey Jr. , Jordan Smith, Aaron (Angela) Bucci of Belleville, Janelle Bucci (Mark Shipman) of Kingston; great-grandchildren: Emily and Evan Bucci, Leslie and Anthony Shipman. Also surviving are nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; brother Robert and step-daughter Wendy Convey. According to Bill's wishes, cremation has taken place and a Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, October 8th at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Harbourview Funeral Centre, 499 North Cumberland Street, officiated by Rev. Bert Vancook of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Private interment will take place at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Bill's memory to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation. "God needed a good carpenter - Now he has the best""
