WILLIAM KEATING Obituary

WILLIAM KEATING
William "Bill" Norman Joseph Keating, 72, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2025, with his family by his side.

A lifelong Northerner, Bill lived with quiet strength, deep respect for the land, and an unwavering commitment to providing for those he loved. He spent his life fishing the lakes and rivers he cherished, harvesting game across the Robinson-Superior Treaty Territory, tending a large garden with his wife, and enjoying the foods he grew and gathered.

Bill married his wife, Billie, in 1979, and together they built a beautiful life in Selim along the shore of Lake Superior. In addition to an extraordinary 34-year career with CP Rail, the couple fulfilled their dream of operating "B&B on the Beach," from 2009-2023. Their kindness and hospitality created lasting memories for family, friends, and guests.

After nearly 50 years together, they remained best friends and lifelong loves.

A steady and thoughtful father, Bill taught his children through actions rather than words, passing on lessons of respect, patience, and gratitude. His humour was subtle, his presence dependable, and his loyalty unmistakable.

Bill is survived by his wife Billie; his children Tiffany (Brock Salminen) and Jonathan; step granddaughters Nicole and Carli Salminen (Alex); his mother, Gretchen Steinke; siblings Donna, Don Jr. (Geraldine), Dale (Tanya), Cheryl (Dave), and Kim; along with many nieces and nephews, and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Donald, his sister, Linda, and his brother, Terry.

Cremation has taken place. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Donations in Bill's memory may be made to the Northern Cancer Care or the Palliative Care Funds here: https://www.healthsciencesfoundation.ca/memorial

Yesterday

Deep condolences to the Keating family on your loss. The north shore area and C.P.R. have lost a noble "Hogger" and local rail historian. He was very helpful to me in my railway historical work unpacking stories of CPR construction back to the 1880's. May he rest in Peace.
