October 7, 1914 - August 15, 2013 William (Bill) Joseph Lewinski, born October 7, 1914, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2013 in Bethammi Nursing Home at the age of 98. Bill was a long time resident of the Cook Apartments at St. Joseph's Heritage. He was a parishioner of St. Andrew's R.C. Church and Corpus Christi R.C. Church. His Catholic faith was very important to him. As a young man, Bill worked on the railway before spending many years working on ships in the Great Lakes. On September 24, 1937 Bill was one of the few survivors of the shipwreck, the Neebing, in Lake Superior, and heroically saved several other crew members. Bill met his wife, Violet (Vi) in 1937 and they married in April of 1940. They raised their two children (Betty & Bill) in the south end of Port Arthur. Bill was an inspector of the Hercules Aircraft built by CanCar during WWII and later worked as bookkeeper for Thomlinson Construction. Bill educated himself through courses at the University of Chicago and went on to become a very well respected businessman, insurance adjustor and owner of Lakehead Adjustments Services. Bill retired from Adjusting in 1979. He always expressed interest and support in the athletic and academic achievements of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family was very important to him. Bill enjoyed home cooked meals prepared by his wife and daughter, a good cup of coffee, game of cards, trips to the casino, and conversing about the rising price of gasoline and other commodities. Bill is survived by his daughter Betty (Ted) Gibbons and son Dr. William Lewinski; grandchildren Tony (Val) Gibbons, Terri Gibbons, Tammy (Jeff) Buset, Tasha (Blair) Gavin, and Marta Lewinski; great- grandchildren Jenna Gibbons, Kevin & Ryan Buset and Barett Gavin. Bill was predeceased by his loving wife Violet in 1995; siblings Peter, Metro and Stella; grandson William (Bill) Lewinski III in 1998, great grandson Mathew Gibbons in 2012 and daughter-in-law Marlene Lange Lewinski in 2013. Funeral Services for the late Mr. William Lewinski will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at 2:00PM in St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church. Interment will take place at a later date in St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to service time. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Thunder Bay, St. Joseph's Foundation or the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
