2016
William (Bill) McColl died April 16, 2016. Born in Perth Scotland to Meg and Will McColl, in the winter of 1929. As a young man Bill did his stint in the British Air Force as a radio controller. Bill chose a career in psychiatric nursing, a good fit for a man that genuinely took pleasure in being of service to others. He met Anna, the love of his life, while attending nursing school. They married, sharing an adventure lasting sixty-three years, ending with Anna's death: February 2015. Bill immigrated to the Lakehead in 1957, Anna the following year with children Carol and Billy. A warm welcome greeted them from brother Andy, Lillian, wee David and special cousin Winnie and her clan. Bill worked at the LPH until retirement in 1989. Well respected by his colleagues, he often spoke fondly of his nursing years. Time spent with friends always included his oversized tackle box and an extra reel! He loved to travel with Anna, claiming their time away allowed for an appreciation of one another. Although they travelled to many countries, a special grin was always shared between the two when recalling their trip on the Nile. Their secret shenanigans never to be revealed! The unthinkable broke into the hearts of Bill's family in 1990 with the death of his beloved son William Jr. Bill's brother Andy was his anchor, providing unwavering support. Andy died tragically the following year, the sparkle never returned to Bill's eyes. Bill will be remembered as a gentle father, teaching by example, never a raised voice or hand, never did he lecture or shame his children. Bill was a good friend, appreciating the uniqueness in each individual crossing his path. Bill bravely chose to be released from life supports on April 13th, his daughter stayed with him for his remaining days. His grandchildren and great-granddaughter had the opportunity to share their love and offer private farewells. Bill will be carried in the hearts of his family in Thunder Bay and Salt Spring Island, Perth (Sister Ann, Jimmy, Lesley) and Olds (Lillian, Barbara, Sandra).
