Zita Demko Obituary

May 27, 1944 – May 5, 2017

Zita Demko (nee Kiskova), age 72 years, passed away peacefully at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, with family by her side. Zita was born in Slovenska Ves, Czechoslovakia. She married her grade school sweetheart, Michael, and had a son Michal. After the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, the family moved to West Germany and then set their sights on the new world in 1969. After the arrival in Canada, the family welcomed the birth of their daughter Claudia. Zita enjoyed working with youth: First as a teacher in the old country, then with individuals with intellectual disabilities at Lakehead Association for Community Living. Ultimately, her biggest passion was her 4 granddaughters. Time in Zita's kitchen was always a treat. Her cooking and baking were second to none. One could often find themselves carrying extra treats home or she would deliver to friends and family. She loved her garden, bonsai, and travelling to warm Florida for the winters. She was a past member and president of the Port Arthur Gyrette Club; member of the Lakehead Coral Group, member of Trinity Lutheran Church and, for a number of years, enjoyed singing in the choir. Zita is survived by her husband Michael; son Michal (Grace) Demko, granddaughters Alexandra and Victoria of Thunder Bay; and daughter Claudia (Frank) Reno, granddaughters ZitaAnne and Leavitt, of Grand Island, Nebraska. Zita was predeceased by her parents Jan and Margita Kiska and brother Jan Kiska. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 9th, 2017 at 11:30 am in Trinity Lutheran Church, 560 N. May Street, Thunder Bay, Ontario. A private interment will be held at Mountainview Cemetery following the reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the charity of one's choice would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the Sargent & Son Funeral Home, 21 N. Court Street.
