DOUGLAS SCOTT Obituary

September 14, 1933 - February 23, 2018
Douglas Forbes Scott (Doug) passed away peacefully in Sechelt, BC on Friday, February 23, 2018 at the age of 84 years.
Doug was born in Benoni, South Africa, on September 14, 1933, the second eldest of seven children.
At age 15 he helped his father in his photographic studio and became a talented photographer himself.
After completing an apprenticeship as a pattern maker, working with wood, he then worked in the drawing office for Stewarts and Lloyds and later started his own business, "Douglas Copy Service," selling photocopy machines.
Apart from his work, over the years he was President of Round Table, where he was involved in charitable work in the community, and served on various committees, including Junior Chamber of Commerce, the South African Olympic Games Committee, South African Canoe Federation and Vaal Canoe Club. Doug and his wife Dot were former South African Canoe - Kayak Champions. In 1954 Doug and his brother Rupert won the South African Mens double kayak championships. Doug was also a keen rugby player in the African winter months and played water polo in the summer months. On Sundays, he and his brothers played grass hockey.
When Ozalid South Africa bought his successful photocopy machine business, he worked for them in Durban, and eventually became National Sales Manager, based in Johannesburg.
Five years later, pining for the seaside in Durban, Doug and his wife returned to the coast and sold property for several years, and once again he excelled.
A new challenge appeared when, at age 63, he and Dot emigrated to Gibsons, BC in Canada to be near their daughter Julie and son Michael and families. They integrated into the Sunshine Coast community and Doug worked for the Coast Reporter selling advertising. There he made lasting friendships before retiring at age 74, to indulge in his hobby of turning wooden bowls.
He is sadly missed by his wife Dot, son Gary (Zelda) in New Zealand, Michael (Tish) in Victoria, Alan (Karen) in England, and Julie (John) in Gibsons, BC., his grandchildren Mitchell (Mae), Matthew, Paige (Alan), Jessica (Lawrence), Roxanne, Tandia, Hayley, Rowan, Luke, Warren and one "acquired" one (Chelsea), all loved their Grandpa Doug.
R.I.P. Doug, our "African King."
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Robert Lehman who was his outstanding, caring doctor for 22 years, as well as his dentist, Dr. Bland and Mary. We would also like to thank the staff at Sechelt Hospital and ambulance attendants, Shornecliffe Care Facility, The Hospice Society, and Doug's Angels: The Threshold Choir Singers.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The Salvation Army Church, 5-682 Gibsons Way on Saturday, March 3rd at 2pm followed by refreshments and your stories of Doug.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest a donation to The Salvation Army Church, P.O Box 1625 Gibsons BC V0N 1V0 or a charity of your choice. Many thanks.

I'm unable to come to Doug's celebration of life today, but I wanted to leave my condolences here.
I knew Doug from my time working with him at the Coast Reporter and he was an absolute treasure!
He was always a light in the office, full of snappy come backs and one liners that could make the most grouchy of coworkers laugh.
Even when he was close to leaving this life he was cracking jokes and making others smile.
He was truly a special man and I'll miss him, but know I'll get to see him again someday in heaven, where I think he'll have a wisecrack waiting for me!
I can't wait to hear it! ❤
