JANE BOWERS Obituary

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our sister, Jane, born in Halifax, England and brought up in Vancouver, BC. From a young age, Jane showed a passion for animals, having an uncanny knack for finding strays and bringing them home to nurse back to health, sometimes secretly in her bedroom. In her teens, Jane spent her free time looking after horses, mucking out stalls at 5:00 am and returning to feed after school in order to afford to keep her beloved horses, Romany and Calypso. Her devotion to the horses caught the attention of many in the Southlands community, and she was soon in great demand to exercise and train other people's animals. Jane started her post-secondary at the University of Victoria graduating from the University of Waterloo while working full time first at General Paint and later at Canada Customs, where she worked her way from border inspections to secondments to the RCMP in international drug enforcement and child protection. The degree of responsibility she took in these investigations earned her the respect of lawyers, judges, and her colleagues but took a huge toll on her health because she cared so deeply for justice. Jane was eventually drawn back to her love of animals and found a property on the Sunshine Coast large enough to accommodate all those she would eventually rescue while also forming the non-profit society Renaissance Rescue. At the same time, she began building a career as a professional dog and cat behavioural consultant eventually establishing Dogs of Distinction Canine Training. Through these and other channels, Jane was known and loved by many on the coast for her compassion, generosity, and tireless dedication to animal welfare. Her positive approach to teaching clients how to train their dogs only with patience, kindness, rewards and respect has made an ongoing impact on the health and happiness of hundreds of dogs on and off the Sunshine Coast. Despite all her responsibilities, Jane also made time to track people's lost pets, offer advice to pet owners across the globe, write a column for the Coast Reporter, host a local cable TV show "Doggin' It on the Coast," work in bylaw enforcement for the District of Sechelt, foster litters of puppies, and, most recently, write successful grant applications for Gibsons Wildlife Rehab Centre. As a lifelong learner, Jane continually upgraded her skills and deepened her expertise in animal behaviour and fear-free, science-based training methods. In addition, she studied a wide variety of topics including teaching techniques, technology, integrative medicine for animals, and Indigenous ways of knowing. Jane was a very private and fiercely independent woman who kept up her many projects, responsibilities, and commitments while undergoing treatment after treatment for cancer. Despite all she was dealing with, she never faltered in showing her grace, kindness, and generosity toward the animals and people she cared so deeply about. Jane was predeceased by her father, Fred Bowers, and will be missed by her mother, Barbara Anne Bowers, sisters Susan and Sarah Bowers and nieces Frances and Madeleine Bowers Ankenman, and Charlotte, Catherine, and Em Bowers Caswell. A celebration of Jane's life will be held on the Coast when public health restrictions allow. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the charities Jane so passionately supported: Animal Advocates; BC Cancer Foundation; Gibsons Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre; and the Sunshine Coast SPCA.

Just saw the beautiful obituary and read the story in Coast Reporter of the new park in Jane's honour. What a wonderful tribute to her. We are on the Island these days and so didn't realize Jane had left us. Much love to you all and sorrow for your loss of such a beautiful person, from Dave and Louise

I only just heard about Jane's passing and am in shock - such a huge loss for her family and her friends!

Jane was just plain irreplaceable on so many levels. I met her when she was commuting from the Coast to Vancouver for her work at Canada Customs. We van pooled together. She was always my first call with any animal training or behavioural problems because she just always made good, logical sense that I could follow - with some science thrown because she was Jane after all, and that provided contrast and balance.

Her face was one of the most expressive I have ever seen. When she was annoyed - boy did you know it and you really didn't want that face, turned your way
. And when she was happy or thought something was funny - her face and especially her eyes - sparkled and danced. Her love on animals was clear, as when she looked at them, it softened everything outside and inside her in her. You could see it. My heartfelt condolences to all those that loved her and I have no doubt, there are many. I am going to join the long list of people who will miss her/ I'm going to let myself feel sad for a while then I'm going to do what I think Jane would do - buck up, suck it up, move on - but never forget.

I was absolutely shocked to learn of Janes passing in December! We had 2 training sessions with Jane in October and I was immediately drawn to her through her energy and compassion. On our first training session she mentioned that she was in the process of updating her booking system to make it easier for people to book online. Boom....within the next few days, it was done. During our second session Jane mentioned a training program in which she was currently enrolled and outlined some videos and wonderful plans she had for the future of her business. She was most certainly a "get things done" person. I am crushed that she was not given the time to see her plans through. From her obituary I can see that she was even more exceptional than I had thought. Remarkable in fact. I hope someone will be able to carry on her work. I have a sense that Jane would like that.

I wish to offer my condolences to her family and friends who must miss her terribly.

I met Jane once and was impressed by how laid back she was, and sharp. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. She lived her life fully and offered so much to animal protection and sharing with the public about how best to live with animals in a straightforward and meaningful way.

I shared many years of friendship with Jane and enjoyed the times we spent shopping and drinking wine on her deck of her house in Vancouver. We had a lot of laughs. We lost touch over the years but I thought of her often and wondered where she was. I am so sad to learn that she has passed away. Jane was a wonderful friend and I missed her when she moved away. My best to the family you have lost a wonderful part of your life, I am truly sorry.
