My heart hurts for you, I cannot imagine. I just now learned of Michael's passing. I am so sorry for what you are feeling, yet rejoice in what Carmen wrote - I agree with her. Love, Light and comfort to you all.

Michael was the first of a group of babies born to a small group of
parents who were longtime friends. Michael was an intense, lively, intelligent little boy with sparkling dark eyes. We were among the steady trickle of guests who came from all over in those early days to enjoy Hanson hospitality at the beach, and we were amazed by Michael’s ability to recite the names of the creatures of the sea, and the kinds of fishing gear a fisher needed.
He could be lightning fast. He could be very funny, angry and cheery again- a mercurial child.
This was the small boy we knew as friends of the family ; we have dozens of adorable photos of Michael and his sister Carmen with our daughters, cuddled up together and laughing.
When we moved further and further away we saw less of Michael and his family. Thus it was a shock when after a few more years we saw him at his cousin’s wedding, literally tall dark and handsome, but with the same twinkling eyes. He was a grown man, a young man we cared about but rarely saw. We knew he rescued a dog who needed someone, and despite the hardships of keeping a dog while employed, he managed with some family support to help that dog live a long life. Russ was greeted cheerfully in Kelowna by Michael working in construction- and another gap followed as again we moved. We saw snazzy photos of his wedding, and pictures later of his children, but for years we missed seeing him in person. When we did see Michael one of the most recent times, he was his friendly self, calling to us and our dog from a few lanes over in the ferry lineup ‘ Hey Solo! Hey Uncle Russ, Auntie Deb ! ‘
That may have been the last time we saw him- tall, waving, smiling in the sun. We hope wherever he is now, his troubles have eased, and Michael is forever young and smiling in the sun.

I knew Michael as a child and associate him with some of my most cherished childhood memories. Growing up on Vancouver Island, it was always a summer treat to visit my dad's best friend's on the Sunshine Coast. Fresh crab, swimming, fires on the beach, rope swings, and even making short films were the recipe for rich family vacations with the Hansons. Being a few years younger than Michael, to me, he was the older, funny, cool guy. He was into Fleetwood Mac before I even knew who they were. I recall admiring his rope swing prowess and his fearless approach (I was still too scared to even climb the platform to get to the rope swing!). One visit, he squeezed both of his legs into one pant leg of some leopard print pyjama pants and did circus-like moves whilst wearing the comically, restrictive attire just to entertain us. Needless to say, I was impressed!
My heart goes out to his wonderful family. Sending you love and strength.

I remember Michael to be a funny and likable person. I didn’t know him well since I moved to Hawaii 30 years ago and didn’t see him that often over those years. But he made friends wherever he went and I remember once he came down here and stayed at his parents place. I drove by the local store and there’s Michael sitting out on the bench out front talking story with a bunch of locals like he’d always been here. He was a good man and was very loved by family and friends. Michael, you will be missed.

Dear John, Terry and Carmen
So very sorry to hear of Michael’s Passing. I have fond memories of seeing Michael get on the school bus at Lower Road and visiting while we waited for bus. I also remember Michael at Roberts Creek School where he was classmates to our son Jeremy.

I met Mike when we were 6 years old at Cedar Grove Elementary and both transferred to Roberts Creek for grade 4. It was great starting out at a new school with a good friend already. Like his obituary noted, I will remember Mike for his quick wit, sarcasm and interest in nature. Growing up with Mike was always spent at the beach, up the mountain or usually at either Wills or my house. I’m going to miss you my friend. Thank you to Mr & Mrs Hanson, as well as Carmen for putting up with us as crazy kids and my deepest condolences to you all. My parents were also devastated to hear this terrible news. I will miss you brother and I will think of you. Thank you for your friendship.
Thank you to Tyrone for sending me this photo recently.
My condolences to all.
Rest easy brother.

Mike will be truly missed by our family. It's hard to believe that we lost such an amazing man. He was always happy, adventurous, generous and compassionate. Mike knew how to make us all smile and laugh. Our boys got so excited whenever Mike would visit because the boys knew he had gifts. He wanted our boys to be the toughest, funniest and coolest just like him (Uncle Mike) and their dad, Tyrone J. I will cherish the time we spent together. I will remind our children how much you loved them. LOVED ALWAYS. NEVER FORGOTTEN. FOREVER MISSED. I love you Mike, till we meet again.

Its hard to believe that mike is gone. Gonna miss him barging in my door with some kind of army antique for the kids or just another day of cruising the mountain for no reason. The Joe house will have a peice missing now. Love you brother.
