PAT DORVAL Obituary

On January 5, 2021, at 11:11 a.m., we bid farewell to a shining light in our community. Pat Adrien Dorval passed peacefully in his home surrounded by family and friends both physical and virtual, he told stories and made us laugh until the very end. Pat was born on March 22, 1963, in Fort St. John, BC and it is fair to say that he was never a shrinking violet and had faced the usual challenges of a kid growing up in a rough northern town. As a young adult, he immediately began pursuing his passion, acting, and managed to carve out a truly amazing career in theatre, TV, and film. Known as "Adrien" professionally and "Pat" to everyone else, he was popular among other actors, never sacrificed his beliefs to make a buck, and treated his fellow cast and crew like family and friends. He had other "jobs" throughout his life, but acting was in his soul, and in Gibsons, BC, he found the role of a lifetime: Santa Claus...very few things made him happier than his time at Sunnycrest Mall creating magic for children, pets and parents alike! Pat was also an extraordinary friend. He had many best friends, hundreds more dear friends, and was adored even by casual acquaintances. His kind, humble and generous spirit was magnetic, but he was also well known for his humour, sarcasm and razor-sharp wit. Laughter was always in abundant supply when Pat was around. Pat is dearly missed by his mother Alberta Dorval and siblings Bett, Barry, Mike, Lea-Ann, Elaine and Jim. Waiting for him on the other side were his father, Len and brother Joe. He is also mourned by all of his many nieces, nephews and cousins, but especially by Ché Dorval, Bett's daughter for whom he was a father figure most of her life. And of course, he is missed so deeply by his partner Ange Cruikshank and beloved son Oscar, as well as in-laws and caregivers: Morley, Sandra, and Candace Cruikshank. The last year of Pat's life was spent living with Ange and Oscar as a family in the home they started together; it was a year spent creating incredible memories and no regrets. Esophageal cancer was the reason for Pat's early exit, but we will never say that he "lost his battle". He never let cancer stop him. He fought until the very end and then he decided it was time to go, on his terms. Cancer ravaged his body, but it never touched his soul. He left with nothing but love in his heart. He won. Should you like to make a donation in his honour please consider Secret Santa Sunshine Coast, Coastal Crisis Outreach or A Loving Spoonful in Vancouver. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, there will be no memorial at this time.

I was so sorry to hear about Pat's passing today and realize he has been gone since January. I knew his mostly as Adrian, as I knew him from the film industry. As a casting director, I cast him in several projects. He had a great character "look" but he was also a very accomplished and interesting actor. A casting director's gift! After I moved to the Sunshine Coast I ran across him numerous times on the ferry when he was going back and forth to do auditions, saw him in a few plays at the Driftwood Theatre in Gibsons and occasionally would bump into him while out and about. I knew he was ill, but somehow missed the news of how seriously ill he was. I know he was a great dad and was always positive and friendly. I am glad a knew Pat and my condolences to all he has left behind. May his big heart and personality live on in your hearts.

Pat brought many smiles to many faces over the years.
He was charismatic, full of positivity, beaming of pure joy.
Our family is deeply saddened to hear he is no longer with us. Our whole community is grieving along side of his family and friends. He will be missed. Thank you Pat. Forever in our hearts.

Wow. Very , very sad. I ve known Pat since we were probably five years old. . But I always remember the Dorval kids just about a 1/2 mile from my aunt and uncle. Lorraine and Gord Sr. At mile 73 On the Alaska Highway (Gordies Service). We had a lot of fun as kids.
I later got to know him after he did an awesome movie called bullies. It was spooky and awesome. I later saw him when we were about in our late 20s by chance. He bought me a cup of coffee, we hugged goodbye. Promising to meet again. Dammit. We never did. I liked that guy. Always. So sorry for the loss of him. I think of him often. ❤

I had a few classes with Pat in junior high school, he was friendly to the new kid, made me laugh with his extraordinary sence of humor. At that age we are trying to figure out where we fit in the world but Pat already knew, he was ahead of the rest of us in so many ways.

Oscar, Pat and the staff at BC Children’s Hospital definitely had some good times during the health difficultiesOscar and his family faced some years ago. They were examples of courage, resilience and optimism in my dealing with them

Pat was a character with energy to spare right from the get-go and stole everyone’s heart! I remember him as a tyke at the BCHydro picnics and Christmas parties and though I can’t say I knew him as an adult it sounds as if he carried out his hearts desires. I send love and support to Berta, Jim, Bets, Barry, Mike, Lea-Ann, Elaine and their families. To Ange and Oscar, May your beautiful memories and his love carry you through this most difficult time and sustain you on-going. Heartfelt condolences to all!

Susan and I were impressed by Pat's driving life force. We met him when he was just beginning the battle for his son Oscar. Oscar had a tumor that could have taken his life and Pat was his Champion. Pat & Ange engaged the community and Oscar was successful. We saw that same positive spirit again as challenges arose and his life force rose higher. This is a lesson on how to do it. Hugs to the family.

I am so very sorry for your loss, but at the same time I am also very happy that you had such an amazing wonderful man in your life. He truly was a real sweetheart. I had only met him several times but those several times have never been forgotten, as his smile and laughter, and his goodness were magical. We've been getting our Santa photos done with him for several years and my 'elves' helped Santa out every Christmas season. ♥ I wish ya'll much love and strength during this time and I hope you find some comfort in knowing that Pat was beloved by all who knew him. He was a great man and leaves behind a brilliant legacy.

I'm sure that everyone has a "Pat" story that talks about his cheerful and "cheering" personality. Thinking of you all at this time.
