Agnes Nemeth Obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Agnes Helen Nemeth on January 31, 2026.
Agnes was born in 1932 in Szeged, Hungary, and was a student at the University of Sopron in 1956, when the Hungarian revolution was crushed by Soviet tanks. She and her family fled Hungary on foot with what little they could carry, and arrived in Vancouver as refugees as part of a group of students and professors sponsored by the UBC. She was forever grateful to Canada.
Agnes worked as a geophysical technician and a teacher's aide. She was a devoted wife of 55 years to her beloved Sándor, and a sweet and loving mom. She adored her four grandsons, and they adored her in return. She cheered all their baseball and hockey games, applauded their music concerts, watched them wakeboard, taught them how to cook and bake, and nurtured their curiosity about science and history.
Agnes was 90 when she moved into Augustine House Retirement Residence. Although uncharacteristically shy at first, she quickly grew to love her neighbours and the kind staff who showed her so much love and affection.
Agnes was always humble and shone light on those around her. Her warmth, her kindness, the sparkle in her eyes, and her gentle touch will all be deeply missed.
Agnes was predeceased by her husband, Sándor; parents, Agnes and Julius Fodor; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Fodor. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Susan (Murray Smith) and Mary (Vincenzo Tersigni); grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew, Michael, and William; brother Julius Fodor; and extended family and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 3900 Arthur Drive, Ladner, BC, at 10am on February 13, 2026, followed by a reception.
