Alan OTTER Obituary

OTTER, Alan John

Alan John Otter passed away surrounded by his family on 28 October, 2022. Born in Poole, England in 1933, he is survived by the love of his life, Amelia (Millie) Otter, his teenage sweetheart who he married in 1955. Alan came from a large family, with four brothers and a sister. After completing an engineering degree at the University of Bristol, he was conscripted into the British Forces, where he sailed on a troop ship from Southampton Harbour half way around the world to Christmas Island in the South Pacific for his tour of service. Following his return from duty, Alan and Millie continued their adventure in 1958 emigrating to northern Ontario. Alan spent a decade working for Atomic Energy Canada where they started their family. They moved their family to Vancouver in 1969 when Alan joined the design team at the TRIUMF research facility at UBC. Although internationally recognized as an expert in the field of electromagnet engineering and particle accelerators, he was always gentle and unassuming, with a quick sense of humour, devoted to his family and active in curling and coaching youth soccer. In retirement he turned his passion for history into volunteering with the Ladner Museum and his passion for curling into a love for lawn bowling.

He will be missed as the much-loved father of Jacquie (Doug) Craigen, Linda Otter, and Ken (Barbara) Otter; the beloved Grandpa of Tara, Arran, Kimberley, Caitlin, Daniel, Laura, Hannah, Devon and Korina, and 'big brother' of Michael and Brian, his surviving siblings.

Celebration of life to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a Charity of Your Choice.

I am sorry to hear about passing of Alan, a great friend, and a teacher. I like to send my sincere and heartfelt condolences to Millie and all family members.
Alan was a great friend and a mentor for me. Alan was very social and invited us several times for summer Bar BQ at his home. I have many memorable experiences of working with Alan and learning good and practical engineering practices from him. I started working with Alan in 1974/75 for beamline services and commissioning magnets and power supplies. He was a great support for planning and managing a challenging big shutdown in 1977/78 when we installed TNF, B/L1 extension and prepared the front ends of secondary beamlines at T1 and T2.
He was always willing to help young engineers and dedicated to TRIUMF. We will miss him dearly.

As a junior engineer at TRIUMF when I started, I have many memorable experiences of working with Alan. While not in the same groups, Alan was often a member of shared social after-works events. I always enjoyed and remember his (English) sense of humour and friendship.
So sorry to hear of his passing. He will remain a endearing reminder in my heart of the early years of building the heart of TRIUMF as it is today.
All who shared our TRIUMF years will remember you in our hearts,
Clive Mark

It was a great pleasure to work with Al. I was the beneficiary of many of his engineering designs, his knowledge and his calm professionalism. I offer my condolences to his family.
