Captain Veitch Obituary

May 18, 1941 - Feb 15, 2025

Doug passed away peacefully with Sharon at his side after spending a lovely Valentine's Day together. They were married for 63 years.

Born to Gordon and Guinevere in West Vancouver, Doug leaves behind the love of his life, wife Sharon (Blakely), brother Don (Bev) and children Daryl (MeiMei), JP (Rona), Cameron, Stacy (Don) and grandchildren Shanese, Makena, Garrison and Kylie and great-granddaughter Rozalyn.

Doug lived and loved to fly. He had a great sense of adventure and a can-do, will-do attitude as a pilot. Doug started monkey wrenching on planes at 16 years old and flying by 17. By the end of his career, he had flown almost every aircraft you can imagine. He helped build (and then fly) a helicopter, flew on floats and skis in the far North under extreme conditions, landed on airstrips with barely enough clearance for the wings, flew waterbombers to fight forest fires and even the largest of commercial airliners, all over the world.

Taking the kids to their events, and in particular rodeos, was always Doug's biggest thrill. That sense of adventure extended to his role as a caring father when Doug fearlessly jumped into the arena to protect a son from a raging bull - Doug was tossed in the air, or as he would say, "A** over tea kettle."

Working on the ranch with cattle, pigs, chickens and sheep, riding horses with Sharon and the kids, and shearing Sharon's sheep was what gave Doug the most satisfaction. Ok, truth be known, he didn't enjoy the sheep so much, but it did give him ample opportunity to teach the kids how to swear!

His adventures in flying took Doug, Sharon and family to many different locales, and they finally happily settled in Tsawwassen.

Sharon and family would like to sincerely thank KinVillage for their incredibly thoughtful and loving care of Doug; a special thanks to Dr. Christine Gemeinhardt and Dr. Jason Kason; and additionally, the friends and neighbours at Tsatsu Shores who were always willing to lend a helping hand.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to KinVillage's "It Takes a Village" Campaign building fund (https://www.kinvillage.org/donate) or mail or deliver a cheque payable to: KinVillage Association, 5410 10th Ave, Delta BC V4M 3X8 (please include a return address to receive a tax receipt).

We will be having a celebration of life at Beach Grove Golf Club, 5946 12th Ave, Delta BC, V4L 1C7 on May 17th, 1pm PT.

I have fond memories of Doug and Sharon when I lived in Crossfield, my friend June Alexander worked for them for a period of time as a nanny, I was also a nanny working in the Crossfield area. Both June and I came from Scotland and we enjoyed Spending time with Doug and Sharon and all the kids. I remember one of the boys let me try out his dirtbike. Quite a few years after I moved away from Crossfield and was married and I was travelling over to Scotland with my 11-year-old daughter and my two-year-old son And it just so happens that Doug was the pilot on the plane from Calgary to Glasgow, my two year-old son and I were able to go and sit in the cockpit and speak with him for about 20 minutes during that time we shared photographs of our family and Chatted for a while, I felt very safe, knowing that Doug was the pilot of the plane. Doug was a wonderful man and a wonderful father to all his children. He will be greatly missed. I send my sincere condolences.
