Clifford MURNANE Obituary

MURNANE, Clifford James June 30, 1925 - July 20, 2022 Clifford (Cliff) Murnane passed away peacefully at Delta View Care Home on July 20th, in his 97th year. Cliff was born in Camrose, Alberta, grew up in Nelson, BC, and later moved to Vancouver in 1937. He was predeceased by his parents, Sidney and Florence (Rowsell) Murnane, brother Harold, sister Ada Matthews, his first wife Norma and his sons-in-law, Wilf Atherton and Ed Jabs. He is survived by his second wife, Virginia and her children: David (Pamela) Diggon, Stuart (Bonnie) Diggon and Anne (Keith) Howlett, as well as his children from his first marriage: Heather (Billy) Sudo, Stephen (Joyce) Murnane, Beth Atherton and Lisa Jabs. He also leaves many grandchildren and great grandchildren, a niece, two nephews and some cousins in Canada, England and Ireland. Cliff attended Laura Secord Elementary School and Britannia High School. On graduation he joined the Canadian Army in the Calgary Highlanders, Communications Division, and saw action in Northern Europe from 1943-1945. He spent another year overseas in the Canadian Army Shows entertaining troops in hospitals and military camps where he played the piano, accordion, and sang and danced with his band. On his return, he went to U.B.C. where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce Degree and worked for Shell Canada for 28 years as accountant, tax consultant and Office Manager. After his retirement from Shell, he was the Executive Director of the Burnaby YMCA for a few years before he became the Administrative Manager for Harper Grey Easton Law Firm. He also spent some time with the Federal Development Bank, and during his last retirement, became a Justice of the Peace, as well as the Administrative Commissioner for the BC Commercial Appeals Commission. Cliff was very active in the Burnaby Community and had presiding roles with the Burnaby School Board, BC School Trustees Association, Burnaby Chamber of Commerce, Burnaby Rotary Club, Burnaby YMCA, the Burnaby Boy Scouts and the Junior Achievement Program. He served on the Douglas College Board for 12 years, and was also affiliated with the Vancouver Association of Legal Administrators. Cliff and Virginia lived in West Vancouver for over 25 years, during which time they travelled extensively. Cliff was active in the West Vancouver Seniors Center, especially in the Bridge Program. His last years were spent at their condo in Tsawwassen until, as a result of declining health and dementia, he went to the West Shore Laylum and the Delta View Care Centres. His family is very grateful for the kind, compassionate care and support he received from the staff in both places. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Endocrinology Association in his memory would be appreciated. At Cliff's request, there will be no funeral service, just private family gatherings. Messages, condolences and memories may be sent to the Delta Funeral Home in Ladner.

So sorry to hear about Uncle Cliff. I was fortunate to live in his basement suite while I was tending BCIT many years ago. He was my Grandma's brother. My condolences to all his family.
