Cynthia was born prematurely in Waminster, Wiltshire, England. Her mother tragically died of rheumatic heart disease when Cynthia was 11 years old, and she was then raised by her father, who had fought in World War 1 in Gallipoli, and her sister Barbara, 6 years her senior. Upon leaving school, she worked in the post office and then at the School of Infantry as a telephonist. There she met the love of her life, Mathew Dennis Young, an army officer of the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers, who had received a Military Cross during the Korean War. They married in Malaya, where their only daughter, Joanna, was born. Cynthia was a devoted army wife, travelling extensively with Dennis until his premature death in 1997.
In 2002, Cynthia joined her daughter in Ladner, who had emigrated there with her husband, Dr. Richard James. She embraced Canada, becoming a citizen, and was able to be closely involved with her two grandchildren, Rosie and Sophia, and later, her great-grandson, Theodore.
She will be sorely missed by her family and friends both in the UK and Canada. She was a gracious and kind lady, always dignified and well presented. She loved playing Bridge at McKee House, particularly Duplicate, was a huge fan of Tennis championships, enjoyed pitting her wits in quiz and trivia games, and avidly read books and followed fashion, the news, and weather.
Thank you to the amazing staff at Augustine House, also to Delta hospital and her physicians, Dr. Clarke, Dr. Shaw, and Dr. Yousef.
