Dave SWAN Obituary

SWAN, Dave Spencer Dave was born December 9, 1943 in Stratford, Ontario. He leaves behind his wife of 33 years Erna, four children, two step children and three grandchildren. He attended H.B. Beal Technical School in London, Ontario where he graduated with Grade 13. Dave was a life-long learner. By the time he reached the age of 58, he had been a licensed mechanic, had earned his Teaching Degree, Masters in Adult Education and started towards his second Masters in Church Ministries, which he acquired in 2003. Dave loved life and regularly commented, "God is good" and "God has richly blessed me." It cannot be ignored and must be mentioned that Dave endured poor health for many years. From approximately the age of 43, Dave's health was a daily battle. If it was not celiac disease, it was diabetes, high or low blood pressure or high uric acid. Dave had a liver transplant in 2018 and, in the end died from cancer. Through it all, he would always say, "It could be worse." He did not concentrate on his ailing body and maintained a healthy attitude towards his daily struggles with his wife steadfast and unwavering beside him until his final breath. As a young man, his motto was, "I was not put on this earth for discomfort or pain." I guess God didn't get the memo. Time and again, Dave said how much he enjoyed his teaching career, but he felt his last career was a blessing from God. Dave passed away on September 7, 2020, at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, with his wife and step-daughter by his side. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Irene Thomas Hospice. They made his last days bearable.

I was a grade 9 student of Mr Swan at SDSS it what must have been `94. I am now an engineer and (very) often think about what, or more importantly how Mr Swam taught us to break down and a solve a mechanical problem. With his file cabinet of exercises I think he taught us in a very progressive way. Testing us like we had customers showing up at our shop was something I will always remember. Mr Swan had such an impact on my life that I thought to google him at 43 years old and found this obituary. He had a very brief but impactful influence in my life.

I met my good friend when we opened SDSS in 1973. We worked together to set up the Technology wing of the school and constantly played tricks on each other. Dave took care of my car and I did favours by repairing furniture for him. Dave was a wonderful colleague and a happy soul. I am proud to have been his friend.

Erna and Family,

My heart breaks with you as you journey through this hardship! Dave has had a huge impact on my life from a young age! I owe so much of my life to the words of wisdom he shared in his office at cedar park church during our family’s most desperate time many years ago! I will forever cherish the recent years of re connecting with Dave and Erna!

RIP Dave!

From Norway, Helen and I send our condolences. I fondly remember som long discussion, in equal long letters, about important passes in the book of Paul the Apostle, that I needed some advice to understand. Thank you Dave for the friendship. And you Erna, when seas no longer are full of whitecaps, I still have some questions.

I met Dave as a student and became friends later in life. He made going to school fun, his love of work, the people around him and his faith was inspirational.

What a pleasure it has been to know Dave and Erna for the last few years.
Dave has shown great faith, dignity and humour throughout his illness.
Our disappointment is that we did not have the pleasure of knowing this wonderful man for a longer time. God bless him and Erna.
