David Coulson Obituary

. Coulson, David January 26, 1953 - September 28, 2013 . We sadly announce the passing of Dave on the evening of September 28th. Dave was born and raised in New Westminster graduating from NWSS ('71). He continued his studies at UBC earning B. Comm ('76) and J.D. ('80) being called to the bar in July 1981. While at UBC, he served in student government and as a UBC Senator, and later served as president of the UBC Alumni Association (91-92). . He began his career practicing law with Clark-Wilson for eight years, followed by ten years as an arbitrator with the BC Government. But Dave found his real career calling in teaching when he joined the faculty at Kwantlen University teaching law as part of the business program, and ultimately being appointed Associate Dean of their Business School. . Dave had a real passion for serving his home community of Delta. He was appointed as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner, proudly serving 20 years, the longest in Delta's history. He loved living in Delta, fitness, and the outdoors, and was pleased to take part in planning and bringing to fruition many parks facilities in his community. He was most proud of the work he did to bring the expansion of the Sungod Recreation Centre to reality. He spent several years serving as Chairman of the Delta Police Board. He was honoured to receive recognition for significant contribution to Delta and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for his community service. . Fitness was very important to Dave. He held a 4th Degree Black Belt in Nisei Karate and taught karate in Vancouver and Delta for 25 years. He enjoyed swimming, and trained with the Delta Retreads Masters Swim Club. . He was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend and will be missed so much by his family: wife Sandra, children Michael and Rachel, mother Eileen, brothers Bob (Dee), Barry (Debbie) and Ron (Carol), nieces Kimberly, Suzanne and Bekah, and nephews Gavin, Christopher and Stuart. Dave was predeceased by his father George Allan Coulson in 2012. He valued family above all else and was completely devoted to his children supporting all their endeavors and loved cruising the West Coast with his son Michael and seeing his daughter's midget hockey team win two Provincial championships. We loved our time together and made family holidays a priority and especially cherished our time spent every summer on the beach in Comox. . Our family wishes to acknowledge the care received by the Fraser Valley Cancer Centre and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance during his incredibly courageous battle with Merkel Cell Carcinoma. Dave never gave up hope and the nurses in the Surrey Memorial Palliative Unit helped make his final days easier for Dave and our family. . A celebration of Dave's life will be held on Friday October 11th at 11:00 AM at the Harris Barn adjacent to Kirkland House in Ladner (4140 Arthur Drive, Delta, BC). www.kirklandhouse.ca . In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Cops for Cancer Charity Ride, or a charity of your choice.

I have only just learned of Dave's passing. Clare and I extend our deepest condolences to Sandra, Michael and Rachel.

I first met Dave in Calgary when we were students on the Contact Canada Programme in 1974. I tracked him down 14 years later when my family and I visited Vancouver and we kept in touch after that. Sandra and David stayed with us in Wales in late '88 and we saw them again in Vancouver in 2000 when we had the privilege of meeting their two lovely children.

Dave was a great guy, very genuine and with a delightful sense of humour. I have only fond memories of a friend I looked up to in more ways than one.

I had the pleasure of training with Dave many years ago at the West End Karate Club. He was always quick with a smile and had a great sense of humour.

After an absence of about 20 years, Dave welcomed me back into the karate fold at the Sun God Community Centre. He was a natural teacher and will be missed.

I first met Dave at the West End karate club where we both began our karate training. Later when Dave had his dojo in Kensington, I helped teach there for a number of years. It was always a joy to train with someone as focused as he was. Later he moved on to teaching in Delta and I ended up teaching in the West End, so we crossed paths less, but he was always his warm and encouraging self when I trained with him. I will miss Dave. My condolences to Sandra, Michael and Rachel.

Dave was my Sensei at the Kensington Community Centre starting in 1988 when I joined his Nisei Karate class to distract me from some life troubles. I had checked out several other clubs and martial arts styles, but was attracted to Dave's class because of his calm and patient demeanor and the frequent laughter I heard in the training hall.

I will miss him.

I did not know David as well as most people here did, but he nevertheless made a lasting impression on my youth. From his memorable karate lessons to his admirable character to the sacrifices that he made for his family, he always commanded my respect. Or, more accurately speaking, he *would have* commanded my respect if I wasn't an immature brat that only knew how to treat him poorly.

When I first heard of David's passing, all I could feel was deep sorrow at how I never gave him the respect he deserved, and that I never thanked him for the positive influences he had on my life, no matter how small. A simple guest book apology will never make up for this, but it's all I can do now.

If we do ever meet in some kind of afterlife, David, I hope you can grant me the great honour of knowing you and being your student once again. Rest in peace.

I have many fond memories of training with Dave at the West End Community Centre. He was a dedicated martial artist who had a pleasing aura of calmness about him. He advanced to the rank of 4th degree black belt in Nisei Karate-do, one of only two of the hundreds of Nisei karate students who trained in this style to do so. Dave was a great student of the art and a wonderful friend. He had many talents. He will be missed!

Dave was a wonderful man. His dedication to his family was paramount. Dave also found time to volunteer in his community of Delta and through his efforts and tenacity he made it a better place to live. Thank you Dave (and his family) for sharing a passion and a desire to help. He is a great example to all about being a good citizen. So happy to have known him. He will be greatly missed. Thoughts and prayers to Sandra and all of the family and friends at this difficult time.

I had the privilege of teaching Dave karate some 30 years ago. From the first day when he put on his karate uniform with its white belt, he exhibited a spirit of calm dedication and focus, and an admirable willingness to share his fast growing expertise and to help his team mates. It was a great joy in the following decades to watch Dave mature as an expert martial artist and an inspiring teacher. He was widely respected by his peers. I shall miss him.

My condolences to David's friends and family. I had the privilege of serving with Dave in student government at UBC. Even then, he showed every sign of the intelligent, caring, even-handedness that became such an asset to the community in later years.

Dear Sandra, Michael and Rachel,
I am so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. It was truly a pleasure to coach him at masters swim practices with the North Delta Sunfish Swim Club "Grey Whales." He always seemed delighted to receive any stroke correction I would give him, which I'm sure wasn't the easiest to take at times! What an improvement he made from the first few practices to even the end of one season. I could tell he was a great role model for Michael and Rachel, and I'm sure a great husband. He will be missed.
Our thoughts are with you all.
Much love,
The Palmer Family

Dear Sandra, Michael, and Rachel,
We are so saddened, to hear about the passing of David. We have wonderful memories of our summers with the North Delta Sunfish.
A kind and gentle person, who always had a smile on his face, and made us feel so welcome to be a part of the Sunfish family, sitting in Sunfish tent city, waiting for our children's races.
Dave and Sandra, were so thoughtful and supportive of me, when I went through cancer, and I am grateful for your kindness.

I had the good fortune to work very closely with Dave at UBC. He was a man of great generosity and commitment. I admired his calm and thoughtful manner and his eloquence. We are all fortunate to have had him touch our lives, I am only sorry we were not in touch more often. Sandra, I have in my den the beautiful totem bookends you both gave to me, a reminder of Dave. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Deborah

The community of Delta was very fortunate to have the benefit of his dedication and contributions. My condolences to Sandra and all his family.

We met the Coulsons around 15 years ago when our boys were in kindergarten together. What a lovely family! The support that both Dave and Sandra showed towards their kids and their endeavours was really amazing...driving, cheering on at sports events..it was just fantastic to see and to be admired. We're very sad that Dave is no longer with us but whenever we think about him, we remember the camping at Cultus with his homemade wine (which he was quite good at brewing at home) and the many times at the pools where he was an Official making sure those kids were doing their swim strokes correctly or having to disqualify them in a gentle way. I still smile when I have to think of him back a few years having the summers off since teaching stopped in April (we teased him about this ever year) and he was off working on his house (he had to do all home repairs all by himself!), going for his runs through the neighbourhood..he just never stopped. His dedication and loyalty to Delta with his volunteer positions that brought so much to our community was simply something that we should all respect esp when he had to squeeze that all into his already busy schedule. Dave, you'll always be in our thoughts and in our hearts and we'll miss you dearly. Sandra, Michael and Rach, we are always here for you.

We became long time friends and his passing touches me deeply. My condolences to his family as we will truly miss his wisdom, his laughter and his friendship
