Denny Rogers Obituary
Well Dad, you finally made the paper.
(It was his weekly ritual to read this paper's obituary section-"I'm just checking to see if I'm in it.")
With heavy hearts, a lifetime of joyful memories and more than a few stories we probably shouldn't repeat, we announce the passing of our dad, Denny. A lifelong resident of Ladner, he seemed to know everyone-and if he didn't, it didn't take long. To most, he was a friend, neighbour, or family in one way or another.
The youngest of four children born to Floyd and Margery Rogers, Denny arrived ready to stir things up. Mischief, troublemaking, and practical jokes weren't phases-they were lifelong commitments. These traits never faded. Right up until the end, you could still catch him sticking out his tongue or pulling a face, just to get a reaction. There wasn't a dad joke he didn't love-and his favourites he told on repeat, with such dedication that eventually the joke wasn't the punchline… the repetition was.
Denny grew up an accomplished multi-sport athlete, with a particular passion for men's fastpitch, playing and travelling across North America. In later years, he traded the diamond for the golf course, enjoying weekly rounds with the Tsawwassen Springs men's club. He was also an avid hunter-spending many cold, wet days in the field calling ducks and chasing pheasants-but his fall moose hunting trips were especially dear to him.
A passionate gardener, Denny took great pride in his yard. If you lived in East Ladner and happened to pass by while he was tending it, chances are you went home with something from it. In recent years, he could often be found cheering on the Delta Ice Hawks-or generously supporting a certain "local charity," Cascades Casino.
The last couple of years Denny faced immense physical challenges, but through it all, he never lost his sense of humour or the spirit that defined him. He faced everything with his trademark wit, quick jokes, and that unforgettable smile. His resilience-fuelled in no small part by his stubbornness-gave us 20 extra months with him, and we are grateful for every day.
Denny was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Matt and Homer; and his daughter, Colleen (Mickey). He is survived by his sister, Jackie; his children, Brian (Dana), Shawnna (Greg), Amanda (Jason), and Kendra (Scott); as well as 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren - many of whom inherited his sense of humour (for better or worse).
In true Denny fashion, we're sure he's already causing a little mischief wherever he's landed. We'll miss him deeply, laugh about him often, and do our best to keep his stories-and his jokes, whether we like it or not-alive.
