Doreen BULOWSKI Obituary

BULOWSKI, Doreen November 19, 1927 - July 9, 2016 With great sorrow, we announce the passing of our dear mother, Doreen. Smiling and happy until the end, mom lived a wonderful life full of rich experiences. Her love of travel and adventurous spirit took her all over the world. A loyal friend, dedicated teacher and coach, Doreen was encouraging and always saw the best in people. She had a passion for learning, which extended into her home, hobbies, and professional life. Doreen led by example and instilled in her family the importance of being active. Some of her athletic pursuits included tennis, field hockey, golf, and skiing. However, dancing was her favourite and she would do it anywhere! Doreen adored her beautiful granddaughters, Amanda, Rachel, Natasha, Emma, and Vera, and enthusiastically supported them in their many endeavours. Predeceased by her husband, Alfred and sister Beatrice. Doreen is survived by her brother Richard (Tilda), her children, Nadine Bird (Don), Stefan, Chris (Monique), and many family and friends. We thank her for enriching our lives and teaching us the importance of compassion, perseverance and life-long learning. We will miss her positive energy and unwavering love. Please join us in celebrating Doreen's life on July 26, 2016 from 4-7 pm at the Capilano Golf and Country Club, 420 Southborough Drive, West Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations to moresports.org or Children's Hospital would be appreciated.

I first met Doreen when my daughter Monique and Doreen's son Chris announced they were getting married. On my first visit to Vancouver Doreen devoted a whole day to be a personal guide for my brother and I and show us the highlights of Vancouver. We were both impressed with her boundless energy, enthusiasm and knowledge.

Doreen was ahead of her time. At a time when most young women were getting married and starting their families in their early twenties she had the privilege and chose to get a University degree, travel and start her family in her mid thirties. She was a woman of Stirling character, a hard worker and total dedication to and love for her family.

What I remember most about Doreen was her compulsion to dance at any time with anyone, her love of opera and her love sports which we shared (attached is a photo of us both skiing at Whistler she in her 80s and me in my 70s).

She was a role model to her children and granddaughters and will be sorely missed.

DOREEN OR TO ME MRS. BULOWSKI WAS ALWAYS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS AT WEST VANCOUVER HIGH SCHOOL DURING THOSE YEARS, 1960-64 WHEN WEST VAN DOMINATED SPORTS THROUGHOUT THE LOWER MAINLAND.

I WAS ON SEVERAL TEAMS THAT DOREEN COACHED AND I LOVED HER SWEET SMILE AND GENTLE AND ENCOURAGING APPROACH.

OUR FATHER ALAN CROLL ALSO TAUGHT FOR 44 YEARS IN WEST VANCOUVER AND HE AND DOREEN WORKED TOGETHER AT SENTINEL HIGH SCHOOL AND WHEN HE RETIRED SHE GAVE A LOVELY SPEECH IN HIS HONOUR.

TEACHER AND MENTORS LIKE DOREEN DON'T COME AROUND OFTEN ENOUGH, AND LIKE THE OTHER GUEST ENTRIES, I WOULD SAY THAT SHE WAS A VERY SPECIAL TEACHER AND A SPECIAL PERSON.

WITHOUT WORDS SHE WILL BE MISSED AND MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH HER FAMILY AND CLOSE FRIENDS AT THIS TIME.

SINCERELY

My first field hockey coach. I remember meeting "Mrs. Bulowski" at field hockey practice in the Canyon Heights gym - grade 7 - 1975. Nadine became my friend which lead to rides in the van, time at their home, and Mrs. B always smiling and kind with her lovely soft voice. My thoughts are with you and your family Nadine. Your mum will be missed and remembered by many.

My mother, Daisy Teal, and Doreen were best friends in high school in Burnaby. When they graduated, apparently they took a lovely trip down the Oregon coast on the train - perhaps a small detail but one that stayed in my mother's heart. She loved Doreen's kind and generous nature, her unique voice, and her encouragement. They were a group of friends who stayed in touch well into their 60s. Doreen was a caring, fun friend. Such a loss to your family but I'm certain you must have lovely memories to hold close in your heart. My sincere condolences.

Doreen played such a significant role in my life because without her I would never have been an ESL teacher at Sentinel. We worked together closely until her retirement and she will always have a special place in my heart. She was endlessly supportive, energetic and patient. The students always came first and she never failed to give them her best efforts. We were so lucky to have her.Working with Doreen was a gift not just because of her abilities and experience but also because it was really fun! I will always honour your memory and miss you Doreen and I deeply regret being unable to attend your funeral.

Doreen Bulowski was one of those rare individuals who not only earned respect but respected all in her sphere. She was certainly encouraging, supportive and demanding of excellence. A terrific sense of humour bundled around a serious note. Most of my contemporaries would say they were so glad to have had her as a role model - especially if one had the opportunity to become a public speaker! How wonderful that she was able to influence so many in her life.

Doreen was a coach of basketball, field hockey and track and field to many of us at WVHS in the late 50s, along with Marilyn Russell. Together they fostered athletic excellence in us and always good sportsmanship. Tough, too. If we missed a practice session we sat out the next game! We truly wanted to excel for them. They set a very high bar, real professionals. I remember many bus rides full of hilarity on our way to games on the other side of town. Many times in my life since I've described to friends those times with great fondness.

Doreen was a dear friend from the moment she introduced herself to me at Sentinel, saying she understood we both had three year olds. That was 43 years ago, and in that time we shared many happy experiences. She was an inspiring colleague and one who made a huge difference to her students. She taught my husband at WVSS in the 50s and Tom remembers her as the most beautiful teacher he ever had! She leaves an amazing family behind, children and grandchildren she was rightly very proud to have.
